A Report On Translating Scientific American 60-Second Science Based On Newmark’s Communicative Translation Theory

English-Chinese translation of popular science has long been under-researched.Many take it for granted that translating popular science is easy simply because popular science is easy to read.Although popular science translation is prevailing,researches on this topic are extremely scarce.Based on the communicative theory of Peter Newmark and taking Scientific American 60-Second Science as the source text,this translation report aims to seek viable methods for popular science translation,through a range of translation cases.The report is made up of five chapters.The first chapter introduces the translation project and explains the significance and objective of this report.The second chapter analyzes the source texts,scripts of Scientific American 60-Second Science podcasts,from lexical and syntactic aspects.Chapter three lays the theoretical foundation by discussing Peter Newmark’s communicative translation and studying the feasibility of applying the theory to translation problem solving.In Chapter four,a wide range of translation cases are illustrated,where four approaches are employed: rewriting titles,re-collocating words,domesticating phrases and restructuring sentences.The last chapter concludes the application of communicative theory and points out certain limitations.
