A Report On The E-C Translation Practice Of Principles Of Neural Science(Chapter 1)

The source text of the translation task is the first chapter,“The Brain and Behavior”,which is chosen from the book Principles of Neural Science(Fifth Edition).The book is edited by Nobel Prize winner Eric R.Kandel and co-authored by several leading figures in neuroscience.As a classic textbook of neuroscience which is known as the “Bible of Neuroscience”.As an objective logical information text with strict sentence logic,concise language,and objective expression,Chapter 1 mainly introduces the views on the relationship between brain and behavior and district functional regions of brain.The text extensively uses biotechnology terms,passive voice,nominalized structures and complex sentences.In this translation practice,the difficulties of translation contain lexical appropriateness,syntactic conversion and textual cohesion.Lexical appropriateness contains the translation of terms,normal words,four-character structure and nominalization.The syntactic conversion includes the idiomatic conversion of passive voice and attributive clauses.Textual cohesion involves the processing of logic and coherence.Through the analysis of translation examples,the translator gives a summary of solutions.First,on the lexical level,the translator needs to consider the relevant context,in addition to academic websites and online dictionaries,to furthest achieve the accurate transmission of word meaning.Second,when translating the long and complexed sentences,the translator needs to compare the differences between English and Chinese,and convert “被” by avoiding and substituting.And in addition,attributive clauses can be translated into short and medium sentences which are more in line with Chinese expression habits.Third,when translating texts,the internal logical connections of the texts need to be carefully considered,and the information contained in the discourse ought to be objectively conveyed to the readers.Through this translation practice,the translator has gained knowledge related to neuroscience,improved her bilingual application ability,and accumulated translation experience in related fields.The translator hopes that this report can bring some reference to other translators,enrich the reference materials in the field of neuroscience in China,and provide a wealth of cutting-edge knowledge for all people who interested in this field.
