New Leipzig School Artist David Schnell Study On Hard Edge Painting Style

Abstract expressionism in the United States developed to its heyday in the 1950 s,and hard edge painting as a kind of cold abstraction was also born in this period.The characteristics of hard edge painting in this period are as follows: sharp edge lines,concise plane geometric figures,fewer color types,the removal of picture space,the use of flat paint to show large areas of color blocks and the contrast between color blocks.With the development of science and technology,economy and society,the hard-edge painting style of the New Leipzig School of painting took on a new look after the unification of East and West Germany in the 1990 s.By analyzing and sorting out the hard edge elements in the works of David Schnell,the main representative of the New Leipzig School of painting,this paper expounds and explains that the hard edge painting style now presents new style characteristics: the combination of hard edge with space,the combination of hard edge with pictorial language,the combination of concrete things and electronic elements of the Internet.This study focuses on three aspects: the visual analysis of David Schnell’s hard edge painting,the representation of hard edge painting style in painting works and its influence on individual creation style.The first chapter briefly introduces the New Leipzig School of painting,which grew up during the unification of East and West Germany.David Schnell,the main representative of the New Leipzig School of painting,studied in the Leipzig Academy of Arts,and during his master’s degree,he and his teacher resisted the idea that painting was dead.The second chapter explains the presentation of the hard edge painting style in David Schnell’s works by analyzing the unique space form,color language and application of network electronic elements.In Schnell’s works,the perspective of space and the depth of the picture are great,and the picture presents an explosive separation with personal meaning.The third chapter introduces the visual representation and metaphor in the works of David Schnell.The artist’s works always have a strong sense of speed.The author analyzes the source of the image of speed in the artist’s works and the transformation of the form of expression,and expounds the contradiction between the natural environment and the social environment behind the artist’s landscape works.The fourth chapter describes the influence and inspiration of David Schnell’s works on the author’s own creation style.The author’s personal creation is influenced by this artist in the application of digital language,reconstruction of images,composition of color blocks and combination of abstract and concrete elements.By analyzing the background of the artist’s social and personal growth and the language features and representations of his works,this paper summarizes the development of the hard edge painting style in the works of David Schnell,the main representative of the New Leipzig School of painting.
