| COVID-19 has severely disrupted the global education system, and its impact on students’ academic performance and physical and mental health has been significant, while further exacerbating educational inequalities.Against this background, education research reports, with the authenticity of data obtained from field surveys, the wide range of survey areas and subjects, and the diversity of data sets, can help assess the precise impact of the pandemic on education and provide information and a basis for global education recovery. However, the practice and related research on English-Chinese translation of education-related research reports in China are not comprehensive enough. Therefore, this thesis aims to study the practice of English-Chinese translation of two education research reports: How COVID-19 Caused a Global Learning Crisis;Education: An Emerging K-shaped Recover under the guidance of Newmark’s text typology theory. This thesis selects the English-Chinese translation practice of two educational research reports published by Mc Kinsey & Company,a world-class global management consulting firm,as the object of study, analyzes the linguistic characteristics, text functions, text types, and translation difficulties of the texts, and proposes specific translation methods of different text types based on text analysis under the guidance of text typology theory. The first difficulty of this translation practice is to determine the function of the source text(ST).According to the definition of text typology theory, the ST has both informative and vocative functions. The second difficulty is what specific translation methods should be adopted after determining the main functions of different parts of the ST.According to Newmark’s definition and translation method of informative text, when translating the part of the ST with mainly informative function,to accurately convey the content and information of the ST,it would be desirable for translators to use equalization or add notes to translate the educational terms in the ST.Meanwhile, translators could apply the translation method of amplification to promote information explicitation in the ST and adopt division to deal with the long and difficult sentences and employ reorganization to change the order of the ST or use amplification appropriately to reveal its hidden logical meanings and implications to meet the reading habits of the target reader(TR).According to Newmark’s definition of vocative text and translation strategy, when translating the vocative function-oriented part of the ST,it would be helpful for translators to present the cultural connotation of the target language(TL)with a four-letter structure, add polite words or use reinforcement to strengthen the vocative function of the target text(TT).Furthermore, they would do well by adding words with the vocative function of the TL and using conversion to change the morphology,to enable the TT to close the distance with the TR.To sum up,under the guidance of text typology theory, the author summarizes the translation methods of the educational research report, hoping to provide references for the translation practice of related texts. |
