A Study Of The Spatial Narrative Of Chinese Suspense Web Series

With its unique story content and narrative characteristics,the suspense web drama is unique among many web drama subjects.With the rise of spatial narrative in the field of film and television,creators of suspense web dramas have begun to realize that space is an important breakthrough in the study of contemporary suspense web drama narratives.The core of the spatial narrative is predicated on the creators’ choice and performance of narrative space,etc.Taking space as an important narrative means,it plays an important role in studying audience psychology,setting story suspense,opening up the story world,forming spatial intertext,and showing narrative value.Analyzing China’s suspense web dramas from the perspective of the spatial narrative not only can help to enrich the results of the spatial narrative of web dramas but also can provide a new approach to the narrative research of suspense web dramas.This thesis focuses on "suspense web dramas",and uses spatial narrative theory,cyberspace theory,and intertextuality theory as the guide,literature research method,case study method,and comparative analysis method to comprehensively and systematically sort out more than 60 suspense web dramas in recent years,analyze the spatial The thesis is divided into six chapters,which will discuss the spatial narrative of suspense web dramas,the spatial narrative techniques,the spatial narrative language,the spatial narrative value,the function of space in the narrative,and the spiritual core and cultural connotation behind the spatial narrative,in order to provide some reference for the practical creation and theoretical research of suspense web dramas.The thesis will be divided into six chapters to study the spatial narratives of suspense web dramas.The first chapter defines the relevant concepts and elaborates on the theoretical basis used.It mainly analyzes the relationship between narrative space and spatial narrative,and defines suspense web drama and the spatial narrative of suspense web drama.Finally,the theories that are instructive for this study are discussed.The second chapter elaborates on the spatial narrative dimensions presented in Chinese suspense web dramas.Based on the spatial theory of Levi Vogel and the spatial characteristics of Chinese suspense web dramas,the spatial narrative dimensions of suspense web dramas are divided into physical space related to nature,psychological space related to discourse construction,and social space which is closely related to life experience.The physical space is not only the physical space where the storyline unfolds,but also the field where the creator examines and discusses the ideology,regional characteristics,and national consciousness of contemporary society;the psychological space mainly embodies the abstract space of the characters’ inner emotions and consciousness,whether it is the closed space,memory space or imagination space,which is an effective means of externalizing the characters’ psychology and a deep reflection on the good and evil of human nature;the social space is a realistic picture of the intertwining of rights and people,and the changes in the way of social interaction brought about by advanced technology under the modernization process.The third chapter is an analysis of the spatial narrative intertext of Chinese suspense web dramas.The spatial narrative intertext of the original text and the images of the suspense web series,the spatial narrative intertext of the suspense web series and other media forms,and the spatial narrative intertext of the suspense web series and the audience,three media spaces with distinct spatial narrative intertext features,are selected to analyze how different narrative spaces open up the story world horizontally and extend the media intertext vertically,thus promoting the spatial narrative process.Chapter 4 discusses the spatial narrative techniques of suspense web dramas from three aspects: spatial suspense narrative,paradox narrative,and detail narrative.In terms of spatial suspense narrative,it explores the changes in narrative perspective,compound sequence,and narrative structure that make the plot information confusing and brings the creators new ideas of spatial suspense setting.In terms of spatial contradiction narrative,based on the three spatial narrative dimensions of suspense web drama,it develops deep thinking about the contradiction between human and environment in physical space,between human and self in psychological space,and between human and human in social space.In terms of spatial detail narrative,suspense web dramas are good at using modern technology to show picture details to produce strong visual impact,using character action details to highlight character features in story space,and promoting the narrative process in story space through object details with specific significance.Chapter 5 is an elaboration of the spatial narrative language of Chinese suspense web dramas,which is mainly interpreted from two dimensions: visual image space and auditory sound and image space.The creators use light and shadow effects to construct the psychological space of characters and create spatial suspense,use color to separate the story space and mobilize the audience’s psychological emotions,use depth of field to open up the picture space,use long shots and montage to realize the documentary and expressive nature of the scene space,and use horizontal and vertical screens to subvert the traditional creation mode and open up new forms of expression.At the same time,it also analyzes the unique aural sound and visual space in suspense web dramas,which plays an important role in conveying spatial information,stimulating spatial association,and enhancing spatial reality.Chapter 6 is an in-depth study of the spatial narrative value of Chinese suspense web dramas,mainly analyzed in three aspects: aesthetic value,cultural value,and social value.In terms of aesthetic value,the aesthetic needs of the Net Generation audience force the creators of suspense web dramas to inject aesthetic meaning,manifest national imagination and characterize individual destiny through imagery space,establish an emotional community of destiny and strengthen identity through emotional space,showing the aesthetic tension of exclusive suspense web dramas.In terms of cultural value,suspense web dramas are rooted in the underlying cultural power,taking the traditional historical and cultural space as the core and integrating it into the virtual game cultural space in the new era,becoming an important force to show the soft power of Chinese culture.In terms of social value,suspense web dramas show social reality through the space of authentic stories,use the space of expressive plots to magnify human good and evil,and convey the core socialist values rich in the spirit of the times.
