With the development of science and technology and the improvement of scientific research,China is involved in more and more frequent exchanges and cooperations on scientific research with other countries. In order to showcase China’s achievements in scientific research internationally,it is essential to accurately translate scientific papers. This is a Chinese-English translation practice report on a paper on soil erodibility.Function Equivalence Theory focuses on the equivalence of language functions between the original text and the target text and requires that the target text should faithfully convey the message and the style of the original text so as to be fluent and coherent for the readership.Under the guidance of this theory, the translator should translate the original information accurately and organize the target text with natural and coherent sentences. In this way,the target readers can effectively obtain the accurate information. This report includes four parts. The first part is an introduction of the translation task. The second part is a description of the translation process, including preparation, translation and proofreading. The third part is case analysis, which is the most important part of this report. It discusses and demonstrates the guiding role of Functional Equivalence Theory in the translation. In this part, the theory is briefly introduced and its applicability to the translation of scientific papers on geography is discussed. The cases are analyzed from lexical, syntactic and textual levels from the perspective of Functional Equivalence Theory to expound the translation methods employed by the translator. On the lexical level, technical terms need to be understood and translated accurately with the help of electronic tools and a number of verbs need to be converted to nouns, prepositions,or Be verbs;on the syntactic level, the sentence logic needs to be reorganized and the sentence structure needs to be rebuilt;on the textual level, cohesion and coherence need to be paid attention to.The last part is a summary, which draws experience from and reflections on the translation.
