Literary Translation Under The Guidance Of Nida 'Functional Equivalence' Theory - Translation Practice Of "Sister Four Gang"

Gang of Four is a novel by Liz Byrski, a prolific Australian writer, and it was published in 2005. In this fiction, four women who have already been in their late fifties decide to make some changes and start a new life journey. The excepts(Chapter Five and Chapter Eight) in the thesis cover the travelling experience of Elizabeth, who is one of the leading characters. Language herein is characterized by female writers’ delicacy and subtlety, to be more specific, the lively and natural dialogues between characters, the use of metaphor and the exquisite presentation of the novel’s atmosphere are the three most striking features that mark the style of the author.The theory of functional equivalence, in which I focus on the same readers’ response is applied in this thesis as the guiding translation principle, particularly, to address the translation of the fore-mentioned three features in the novel, in an attempt to refashion the artistic style in an appropriate and complete way so as to let the targeted readers of the translated version have the same reading experience as the native readers.
