Petroleum reservoir management has become an important strategy for oil and gas companies to improve the efficiency of oilfield development and economic benefits. The translation of Petroleum Reservoir Management: Considerations and Practices(Chapter 3)is of great significance to the reservoir management practice of domestic oil and gas companies. The source text has the linguistic features of professionalization and standardization, conciseness and objectivity,as well as logicality and coherence. It aims to deliver information about petroleum reservoir management.According to Newmark’s text typology theory, different types of texts need to be translated with different translation methods.Communicative translation is target reader-centered and focuses on the effect of information transmission. It is appropriate for the translation of informative texts. Therefore, under the guidance of Newmark’s text typology theory, communicative translation is chosen as the main translation method of this translation practice. In this way, information from the source text can be effectively delivered. From the lexical, syntactic, and discourse levels, this report discusses and summarizes the difficulties encountered in this translation practice and their corresponding translation techniques, aiming to provide references for the translation of petroleum economic texts.Through case analysis, the major specific findings are as follows. At the lexical level, the exact meaning of semi-technical words and acronyms can be determined by contextual analysis;the translation of acronyms should be standardized. At the syntactic level, nominalized structures can be converted into subject-predicate or verb-object phrases, and extended into clauses or sentences;passive sentences can be converted into implicit passive sentences, active sentences, judgment sentences, and non-subject sentences;linear translation, reversion, division, and restructuring can be used in the translation of complex sentences. At the discourse level, maintenance, conversion, and addition or omission of cohesive devices can be applied to the reproduction of cohesion and coherence;the translation of the paradigm of commercial contracts should conform to the standards of commercial contracts in the target language.
