In recent years,as China’s economic strength has grown,it has become a top priority to enhance China’s soft power through increased international cultural exchanges.Film and television productions,serving as mediums,play a significant role in cultural communication.I Am What I Am,a China-made animation,took Guangdong lion dance,a form of Chinese intangible cultural heritage,as the storyline and followed the protagonist’s journey to overcome obstacles and achieve his "lion dream",promoting traditional Chinese culture and meanwhile,conveying Chinese strength and spirit.This thesis takes the subtitles of I Am What I Am in both Chinese and English as the research object.Under the guidance of Eco-Translatology,the author analyzes the subtitles from the perspective of "three-dimensional transformation",including language,culture and communication.Based on 36 specific examples,the thesis studies the factors that translators should consider in sub title translation and the importance of translator’s adaptation and selection.This study aims to expand the research field of this film,and explore the guiding significance of Eco-Translatology for subtitle translation of films made in China,so as to boost cultural exchange of Chinese films internationally.The thesis finds that in translating the subtitle of I Am What I Am,translators need to consider multiple factors,including source and target languages,source and target audience,translation purpose,the way of release,and marketing strategy,amid the backdrop of Chinese culture "going global".In addition,the translator can achieve"adaptation and selection" in terms of language,culture and communication.This helps the translator convey the precise cultural connotation and communicative information in translation,thus boosting the overseas promotion of Chinese intangible cultural heritage represented by lion dance. |
