| Cultural exchanges between nations have increased during the past few years.Excellent Chinese films and televisions have been exported widely, among which Empresses in the Palace has gained great attention and praise. The continued popularity of Empresses in the Palace is mainly due to its successful subtitle translation. Therefore,it is meaningful to study the subtitle translation of it.Subtitle translation is different from literary translation, and it is the joint cooperation of multiple information channels, such as picture, plot and sound,to convey meaning. In subtitle translation,a holistic perspective is needed.Eco-translatology,proposed by Professor Hu Gengshen, has regarded translation as a whole with interrelated elements from the very beginning, exploring the internal and external mechanisms of translation from linguistic dimension, cultural dimension and communicative dimension, which serves as a crucial guide for subtitle translation.Based on the theory of Eco-translatology,this thesis studies the subtitle translation of Empresses in the Palace from the perspective of three-dimensional transformation, hoping to discuss the eco-environment,mainly analyzes the translators’ adaptive selection and transformation in three dimensions, and explores the different translation methods employed in the three dimensions. The study found that in the language dimension, the translator was able to take into account the differences in stylistic structure between Chinese and English, and ensured structural integrity of the sentences by adding sentence components and supplementing logic relationship to conform to the language habits and the grammatical rules of target language;in the cultural dimension, translator was able to pay attention to the interpretation of cultural vocabulary and idioms, and conveyed the core cultural connotation through free translation and substitution;in the communicative dimension, translator focus on the adaptive selection and transformation in the bilingual communicative intentions, and translator was able to adopt the omission and amplification to delete or highlight the main information,so as to achieve communicative effect.Generally speaking, based on the theory of Eco-translatology,the translator chooses the translation methods flexibly to convey the information of the original text in the linguistic dimension, cultural dimension and communicative dimension, overcome language barrier and cultural differences,so as to realize “three-dimensional transformation” as much as possible.Through the analysis of this case, this thesis hopes to point out the guiding role of Eco-translatology on subtitle translation,as well as to provide some useful guidance and references for subtitle translation. |
