With the improvement of China’s international status, foreigners are increasingly interested in China’s beautiful scenery and long history.Among them, the British Broadcasting Corporation(BBC)has produced many documentaries about China, such as The Story of China,Chinese New Year: The Biggest Celebration on Earth and Wild China. These documentaries have become an effective way for people to learn and spread culture due to their aesthetic and informative value.Among the documentaries produced in China,Aerial China is the only documentary that has scored 9.4 on the authoritative website Douban.com for all the three seasons. Therefore,if the subtitles are translated into English,Aerial China can be broadcasted overseas so that people all over the world can appreciate China’s great landscape and learn Chinese splendid culture. The translation materials of this report are the subtitles of Jiangxi and Anhui episodes of Aerial China. The text is a kind of commentary, which is popular,instantaneous,non-annotated,comprehensive,and listening-oriented.Among them, the limitation of time and space is the fundamental feature that distinguishes subtitle translation from ordinary texts.Specifically, subtitles cannot exceed two lines at the bottom of the screen,Chinese subtitles cannot exceed16 Chinese characters, and English subtitles cannot exceed 35 letters. Therefore, subtitle translation is also supposed to be popular, instantaneous and time-space restrictive, which determines that the translation should be short, concise and easy to understand. However,in this translation material, there are a large number of expressions and sentences with strong national features which are formed in specific cultural background and thinking mode, causing certain difficulties in translation. In view of this, the author takes three-dimensional transformation(linguistic transformation, cultural transformation and communicative transformation)of eco-translatology proposed by Hu Gengshen as the guiding theory, analyzes the difficulties encountered in the translation materials with examples, and summarizes some applicable translation methods accordingly.Firstly,as for the two types of difficulties in the linguistic dimension---run-on sentences and non-subject sentences, the translator adopts imitation to deal with them to adjust the language form by adding or omitting sentence components or adjusting the order, thus realizing the transformation of the linguistic dimension.Secondly,in the cultural dimension, the translator adopts literal translation to translate culture-loaded words, preserving the cultural image of the original text and promoting the external dissemination of Chinese culture. However, the cultural meanings of proverbs are more complicated,so the translator adopts liberal translation to translate the proverbs, which reduces the understanding obstacles caused by cultural deficiency, realizing the transformation in the cultural dimension. In the communicative dimension, the translator uses paraphrase to deal with buzzwords, which conveys their meanings while keeping their vivid features as much as possible. As for place names, the translator combines transliteration and literal translation to translate them, which retains the original Chinese pronunciation features and avoids increasing the understanding burden of the target language audience, realizing the transformation of the communicative dimension.Through the transformation of the above three dimensions, the translation can be more natural and fluent, which is conducive to the overseas spread of Aerial China.Meanwhile,it is hoped that this report can provide a reference for future translation practice and studies.
