Xi Jinping:The Governance of China embodies Chinese President Xi’s insights into domestic and global landscape. Its multilingual versions are precious materials for other countries to know more about China.Present studies on the previous three volumes are not rare, but not on this newly-published volume. The thesis intends to build a small-scale corpus based on Xi Jinping:The Governance of China(Volume IV).The study is based on Yang’s equivalence political effect theory derived from Eugene Nida’s "functional equivalence" theory.According to this theory, translation of political texts should consider political orientation, equilibrium, and dynamics. That is to say, translators are required to have high political sensitivity and professionalism to adapt the translation to different contexts and scenarios and keep a balance between the source language and target language. The research conducts textual analysis to study translation methods of classic quotations in Xi Jinping:The Governance of China(Volume IV)with the help of a self-built parallel corpus. The thesis intends to find out the types of translation methods of classic quotations in Xi Jinping:The Governance of China. The study discusses three types of translation methods, namely literal translation, paraphrasing and omission.Literal translation is the most commonly used translation method in the book. From the perspective of Political Equivalence and Aesthetic Representation(PEAR),the thesis analyzes cases and discusses translation methods of classic quotations. The thesis finds out that translators flexibly employs the three translation methods, namely, literal translation, paraphrasing and omission. In most cases, major information is well reserved, traditional Chinese culture and language features are well conveyed, and the aesthetic of source texts is represented.Nonetheless, there are some examples that show a lack of equilibrium.Because literal translation tends to focus more on source language, thus hampering English reader’s understanding.
