Despite the significance of the creation and dissemination of historical academic works,Chinese translations of such texts and related translation studies have not yet attracted sufficient attention. Therefore, the study of Chinese translations of historical academic works may provide professionals with a wider range of research materials, present Chinese readers with more diverse historical and cultural information, and further expand the perspective of translation studies. This report focuses on discourse coherence in the process of translating Chapter Five of Ancient Egypt and Early China:State,Society, and Culture into Chinese.Discourse coherence plays an important role in the translation of academic texts, directly affecting the quality of the translation, and placing high demands on the translator’s understanding and expression abilities.Based on translation practice, this report highlights four key aspects that a translator need s to consider to achieve discourse coherence when translating historical academic texts.First,at the grammatical level, the translator should use cohesive strategies such as ellipsis, repetition, and synonymous substitution to deal with cohesive devices present in the original text.Second,at the semantic level, the translator should conduct contextual analysis to understand the meaning of words and sentences, and reconstruct remote cohesive devices present in the original text.Third,at the pragmatic level, the translator should focus on enhancing the reader’s reading experience by adopting strategies like providing additional information and explanations. Finally,at the stylistic level, given the frequent use of scripture quotes in historical academic texts, translators must consider different translation strategies like retaining the original text, explaining the original text,or adding notes, depending on the type of quotation.
