A Report On English-Chinese Translation Of Academic Research Texts On Politics

Translation of academic paper is an important form of academic exchange among countries.By translating academic texts,the latest academic research results can be spread,which facilitates academic exchanges all over the world.Deliberative democracy theory is regarded as the latest development of western political philosophy,which has attracted more and more Chinese scholars.In this report,two political papers on deliberative democracy are selected as the source texts,and the translator hopes that this report can provide some help for the academic exchanges in the field of politics.This report is divided into five parts.The first part illuminates the background,purpose and significance of this translation task.The second part introduces the translation task,the source text and the target readers.The third part describes the translation process from the aspects of pretranslation preparation and quality control after translation.The fourth part presents theoretical studies on cohesion and coherence,and analyzes the difficulties of translation from the perspective of discourse coherence and solutions to the problems.First,there are implicit logical relations in the source text,and the strategy of explicitation is used to make the logic of the target text clear;second,in view of the differences between English and Chinese in terms of cohesive ties,the coherence of the target text can be achieved by the shift of some cohesive ties;in addition,the information reconstruction of long and complicated sentences make the target text conform to the norms of the target language;finally,the stylistic coherence of the target text is achieved by certain means,such as using neutral words and four-character words.In the last part,the translator summarized the whole translation task in terms of difficulties,gains and some problems.Through this translation task,the translator has obtained an overall understanding of the western deliberative democracy theory,and has gained some core knowledge about it.The translator has further learned about the features of academic texts and selected appropriate translation strategies and techniques to solve the difficulties in the translation process,and thus her translation practice ability has also been trained and improved.At the same time,the translator hopes that this report can provide some ideas and references for the translation of political academic texts.
