| After nearly 100 years of development, the study of textual coherence, extended to functional grammar, pragmatics, semantics, psychology and many other fields, have gained great achievements. However,in contrast to what has been achieved in the field of linguistics, the study of textual coherence attracts relatively less attention in the field of translation studies, and thus is in need of a broader and deeper exploration. This paper is a translation report on the translation of four chapters of the introduction to Romeo and Juliet(Oxford World’s Classics)from English to Chinese.Being an academic paper in terms of text type, the source text features concise expression and tight logical coherence. It is important, consequently,to reconstruct the textual coherence in the translation. In fact,my initial Chinese version failed to some extent to rebuild the textual coherence. In contrast, the final version achieved better coherence. Therefore,I adopted the multi-dimensional coherence model proposed by Wang Dongfeng.Based on his theory,I probed into the causes for the ill-functioning coherence in my first draft and then discussed about the ways in the final copy to modify previous failed translation as well as their effects, corresponding to the grammatical, semantic, pragmatic and stylistic dimensions of textual coherence. In the end, this paper aimed at summing up the coherence reconstruction strategies suitable for translating academic texts into Chinese.More specifically,in the grammatical dimension,I used a variety of grammatical links to construct a rigorous and accessible grammatical network in the translation. In the semantic dimension, since academic texts are featured as informational continuity,I dug out the cohesive chains formed by relevant words in the source text and implanted them into the translated version. In the pragmatic dimension,I followed“the Cooperative Principle” and tried to connect the translation with the field the text refers to,for the sake of ensuring the faithfulness and relevance of the information conveyed. In the stylistic dimension,I took the genre of the academic text as the macro principle, and achieved stylistic coherence by translating generic conventions and variations faithfully.Generally speaking, these four dimensions, closely intertwined, are emphasized to varied extent, building up a stable and comprehensive basic framework for textual coherence of the academic text. |
