This report is based on the C-E translation task of China in Historical Monuments(Shandong Volume),which introduces the immovable tangible cultural heritage in Shandong Province in an item-by-item structure, showcasing the characteristics of ancient Chinese architecture and rich cultural connotations. In this practice, the difficulties focus on the loss in translation, which is mainly caused by the semantic non-equivalence,implicit textual information and cultural default.Specifically, the semantic non-equivalence embodies on the vacancy of ancient architectural terms and the metalanguage;the implicit textual information in the source text arises from the hidden logical relations and zero anaphora;the cultural default primarily reflects on the historical background, religious culture, and historical figures. To address the aforementioned difficulties, various compensation methods are frequently employed at the semantic, textual and cultural levels to minimize the translation loss.In light of the translation practice,it has been found that the semantic and cultural compensation actually belong to the compensation at the lexical level, and seven compensation methods of paraphrase, amplification, adaption, generalization, annotation within text, footnote, preface+illustration are applicable to make up for various translation loss.At the textual level, adding logic connectives, adding subjects and shift of perspective are the three methods employed to compensate for implicit logical relations and zero anaphora.By adopting these compensation methods, the information and cultural connotations of the source text can be appropriately conveyed to the target readers.
