| Translation in the field of artificial intelligence is a bridge for Chinese and foreign artificial intelligence to learn from each other.Therefore,the translator chooses the book Beyond Artificial Intelligence.The author of the original book,which was published in2018 by Wiley-ISTE,which is an independent international publishing company based in London,Alain Cardon is Professor of Computer Science specializing in artificial intelligence and artificial consciousness.Upon publication,the book gained wide acclaim and its author gained popularity from artificial intelligence enthusiasts.The original book mainly talks about the relationship between the organizational architecture of physic system and the feeling of thinking,the computer representation of an artificial consciousness and the similarity of human consciousness and artificial consciousness.This translation report will be analyzed based on Chapter 2 of the original book.The underlying theoretical foundation for this translation report is Peter Newmark’s semantic translation and communicative translation theory,by which the translator discussed difficulties and solutions in the course of translating.The original text is English for science and technology(EST)and also an informative text.Thus,Newmark proposes that communicative translation(CT)strategy is employed for informative text as in CT message is the most important part and it should be given priority.However,there is no clear and absolute boundary in a technical text which should be translated semantically or communicatively as there are a few expressive and vocative functions in a technical text.Of course,only a limited number of rhetorical and aesthetical functions are utilized in scientific and technical text.Therefore,in the translation of technical texts,the principal task of translators is to transfer the information of the source language in a correct and logical way based on communicative translation strategy.To ensure that correct transmission of information is attained,the translator needs to use such translation techniques as direct translation,free translation,amplification,syntactic readjustment and conversion based on communicative translation strategy.The surface structure of a sentence is the same,but there are two or more differentdeep structures,which will cause structural ambiguity.In short,if a sentence has more than one way of understanding,there will be structural ambiguity.In the process of translation,structural ambiguity cannot be eliminated from only a grammatical point of view,but it will cause obstacles to the understanding of the original text.Hence,the dissertation mainly talks about three causes that lead to structural ambiguity,they are: 1)more than one role that different sentence elements play in a sentence;2)ellipsis;3)negation.The thesis also discusses how to eliminate structural ambiguity using formal logic.Structural ambiguity is far from uncommon in technical texts.Consequently,only if such problems caused by structural ambiguity when the Source Text needs to be comprehensible are tackled with completely can the information of the original text be transferred correctly applying semantic and communicative translation strategy and such translation techniques as are said above. |
