Individuals with diverse cultural backgrounds often possess distinct cultural identities and communication patterns. In the process of communication, participants with common background knowledge tend to omit the shared background knowledge, leading to the phenomenon of cultural default.Xi Jinping:The Governance of China is a compilation of President Xi’s major remarks.Derived from China’s profound history, this book contains a huge amount of cultural default elements. For readers from other countries,it may be difficult to compensate the vacuum of meaning brought by cultural default due to the lack of necessary background knowledge. To consolidate China’s international discourse system, the question of how to translate these elements must be answered. On the basis of 1093 cases of cultural default collected from the fourth volume of Xi Jinping:The Governance of China, this thesis categorizes cultural default elements and translation strategies adopted to deal with these elements.Guided by the three rules of Skopos Theory, which are the skopos, coherence and fidelity rule, the thesis selects examples to further elucidate why these strategies are adopted and how are they used to deal with different kinds of cultural default elements so as to achieve the skopos of the translational act. With these analyses, this thesis aims to contribute to the translation of cultural default elements and serve the needs of China’s international publicity translation.
