A Report On The Translation Of Tai’s Rice Culture(Excerpt)

The translation of folk culture has a far-reaching significance for cultural exchanges and research into ethnic groups.In Chapters 6-8,The Tai’s Rice Culture detailed Tai people’s folk culture from the material,spiritual,social and language aspects.Due to the language and cultural differences,the translation of folk cultural should be carried out in a cultural background.With Tai’s Rice Culture(Chapter 6-8)as the subject and Bassnett’s cultural translation theory as a guide,this paper analyzes the different methods to translate folk culture,and highlights the significance of cultural translation theory in the translation of folk culture.Research shows that the methods of transliteration with notes,literal translation with notes,and free translation with notes are mainly adopted when translating spiritual,cultural and social folk culture.These ways not only bridge the cultural gaps and fully explain the cultural background knowledge,but also help readers to understand the cultural connation of source language and promote cultural exchanges.For the translation of language folk culture,it is necessary for translation methods to vary with different situations so that the relationship between language and culture can be reflected.In addition,the translation of language folk culture must fully consider the needs of its target readers;therefore translators can have more freedom to modify the source language.
