The 1980s and 1990s witnessed the golden age of Taiwan films. However, the prosperity did not last and Taiwan Film industry has a whole decade of depression followed after the golden period. In this context, the release of Cape No.7 marked the rise of new generation in Taiwan film:Named as "the overnew generation" young directors like Wei Desheng,Niu Chengze,Yang Yazhe and Lin Shuyu are viewed as the avant guard generation and valued as the Renaissance force by media and academy. As a matter of fact, while the "the over-new generation" distanced from the Taiwan’s phenomena film model in new era, this dissertation aims to state that "the over-new generation" as a inclination in film-making process rather that a fixed label of generations. In the introduction of this dissertation,"the over-new generation" will be analyzed as a film-making phenomena from different aspects in detail.Taking the data in Taiwan Film Yearbook into consideration, the current state of "the over-new generation" will be discussed as a paradoxically co-exist of booming and declination. The first chapter purposes on looking at "the over-new generation"through the lens of Taiwan film history. The external element of domestic support and the internal element of creators’own wills are two significant factors result in "the over-new generation" phenomena——It shows Taiwan film makers efforts in last decade as well as the 21st century’s infect on individuals’ experience. The second chapter focuses on text analysis of "the over-new generation"from 2008 to 2015.Applying genre theory and text comparison method, this section will conclude with a sub-genre of Youth-film——the so-called "petite fresh and pure film".In this sense, the nature of "the over-new generation"phenomena is the return of sub-genre films. The following chapter reviewed the definition of "generation" when it comes to the realm of film directors.Comparing the original concept of film generation and the works of "the over-new generation",it could be noticed that it is almost arbitrary to label this group in one generation. At the same time, the predicament which "the over-new generation" faced in film-making process indicates the fact that the assertion of "director generation" shows misunderstanding on this particular phenomenon and is questionable in itself. To draw a short conclusion, this dissertation refers to the films of "the over-new generation".The study aims to interpret their films cross the concepts of generation, breaking the boundary of certain time and space.Looking as these interesting texts through different perspectives, this dissertation purposes on finding the nature of this film-making phenomena and revisiting the film texts regardless of established stereotypes.Hopefully, this would provide a new approach to reevaluation and rediscovering of "the overnew generation". |
