In the early 21st century,China entered the ranks of an "aging society." Due to the unique characteristics of history, economy, and population policies, the current elderly care model in our country primarily focuses on home-based care, with social care as a supplement. This model allows elderly individuals to continue living in their original residential environments, reducing the negative impacts of external environmental changes. As a result, communities have become the central area of life for most senior citizens, and the age-friendliness of communities has become particularly important. For elderly individuals in communities, harmonious social interactions are also essential for ensuring a happy life. However, due to the rapid development of the information age, increased mobility of people, and diversified lifestyles, neighborly relationships in many communities in China have become increasingly indifferent. Therefore, this article takes an example of a relatively new community in Hangzhou City, established after 2000,to address the issues of social interactions among elderly individuals in such communities and the age-friendliness of community spaces.By summarizing the characteristics of the elderly individuals themselves, their activity range, and their social interaction features, the article identifies three essential elements. It then provides a summary of the qualities of agefriendly community spaces, including quality characteristics, location, and spatial form. These three aspects contribute to the features that "elderly-friendly" community spaces should possess: spatial friendliness, friendliness towards people, and information connectivity.Building upon these features, the article attempts to propose design strategies that embody care for the elderly, focusing on the concept of agefriendliness, community renewal as a means, and social interaction spaces as focal points. It explores the design strategies for four high-usage spatial nodes within the community, addressing issues such as significant level differences, steep steps, nonmotorized vehicles occupying spaces, etc. The design methods aim to eliminate level differences, replace steps with ramps, prevent space occupation, and avoid age segregation.Additionally, the article provides some age-friendly suggestions for other areas within the community.Furthermore, based on research conducted on existing communities, the article puts forward design principles to implement the concept of age-friendliness.These principles include promoting intergenerational integration, considering the sustainability of design and usage, adapting to various climatic conditions, and emphasizing information connectivity. The aim is to provide some reference for future research in this field.
