Historic and cultural districts record the development of a city and carry its traditional memories. However,as urbanisation accelerates, many historic districts are under pressure to be redeveloped or renewed, and traditional methods of large-scale demolition and redevelopment often destroy the original historical and cultural values of the district. The core concept of organic regeneration, however,is to respect history, preserve cultural heritage and pass on urban memory. In organic regeneration, the regeneration of historic districts is no longer a matter of demolition and alteration, but a means to upgrade the functions and improve the living environment of historic districts by enhancing public space, improving environmental facilities and perfecting urban functions on the basis of preserving historic buildings, cultural landscapes and social history. As a result, organic regeneration has become a highly sought-after regeneration model at this stage. The Daohe ancient district is one of the most important historical and cultural districts in Taizhou, with the largest surviving group of Thai-style residential buildings in Taizhou, and has a certain degree of historical and cultural representativeness. However, with the acceleration of urbanisation, the large-scale transformation of the neighbourhood has caused serious damage to the preservation of traditional architecture and cultural heritage here, and the neighbourhood has lost its original vitality. There is therefore an urgent need to explore a model of conservation and renewal and development suitable for the ancient neighbourhoods of the Daohe ancient district.Based on the theory of organic renewal, this paper analyses some of the best cases of renewal and renovation of historical and cultural districts in China from four aspects: the subject of renewal, the content of renewal, the mechanism of renewal and operation, and the embodiment of the concept of organic renewal, and summarises the principles and strategies of renewal and renovation of historical and cultural districts in China. To address the current situation of the Daohe ancient district in Taizhou, this paper uses the PSPL research method to conduct a comprehensive survey on the quality of public space in the district and a survey on the behavioural and activity characteristics of the people using the district. The research data was visualised using graphs and charts to compare and determine the main factors affecting the quality of the public space in the Inag River Ancient Quarter and to summarise the existing problems in the quarter.Based on the results of the expert ratings, the evaluation criteria are weighted, and the current problems are graded according to the results of the survey, with solutions proposed in order of importance, such as a reasonable change of mode, improvement of the operational mechanism, rational formulation of policies, creation of special businesses and improvement of spatial facilities. The project aims to explore the organic regeneration model of the ancient area of the Daohe ancient district, and also provide reference and lessons for the regeneration of other historical and cultural areas.
