Under the background of economic globalization, urban agglomeration has become the carrier of coordinated development of regional integration and the focus of national economic development, which can promote coordinated development of regional economy and society. In recent years, promoting the healthy development of urban agglomerations has been paid attention to and can be reflected in the decision-making of the party and the state. In the "Thirteenth Five-Year Plan",it is clearly proposed to strengthen the cultivation of urban agglomerations in the central and western regions and provide more growth poles for regional development. In the national "14th Five-Year Plan",it is clearly proposed to develop and expand urban agglomerations and metropolitan areas, guide the development direction and construction priorities of large, medium and small cities by classification, and form a spatial pattern of urbanization with dense density, division of labor and cooperation, and perfect functions. In the Report to the 20 th CPC National Congress of the Communist Party of China,it is proposed to rely on urban agglomerations and metropolitan areas to promote the coordinated development of large, medium and small cities. In the Outline of Ecological Protection and High-quality Development of the Yellow River Basin promulgated by the State Council,it is clearly proposed to build high-quality and high-standard urban agglomerations along the Yellow River, and the Central Plains urban agglomeration is also among them. The strategic position of urban agglomeration can be revealed in the decision-making of the party and the country, and the central plains urban agglomeration,as an important supporting point for the rise of the central and western regions,is also one of the key urban agglomerations built along the Yellow River. Therefore, this study selects Central Plains urban agglomeration as the research object. This paper holds that the spatial structure of urban agglomeration includes three aspects: hierarchical scale structure, functional structure and contact network structure.Studying the spatial structure of Central Plains urban agglomeration from these three aspects can better understand the development stage and development law of Central Plains urban agglomeration, and it is of great significance to promote the sustainable and healthy development of Central Plains urban agglomeration through optimizing the spatial structure. This paper takes 30 cities in the Central Plains urban agglomeration as the research object, based on the central place theory, growth pole theory, spatial interaction theory and sustainable development theory.with the help of statistical yearbook data and Baidu index data of various cities, using the research methods such as rank-scale method, urban primacy method, location entropy method,Nelson index method, functional intensity method, gravity model, social network analysis method and information flow intensity method. This paper analyzes and studies the evolution of hierarchical scale structure, functional structure, contact network structure and spatial structure optimization of Central Plains urban agglomeration from 2000 to 2020.The research results show that:(1)The hierarchical scale structure of the Central Plains urban agglomeration is not complete enough, and the city scale is constantly expanding. In 2020,the Central Plains urban agglomeration is short of megacities, and the number of small and medium-sized cities accounts for 73.33%.The number of cities above megacities is small,so it is difficult to form an effective radiation effect.(2)The hierarchical scale structure of Central Plains urban agglomeration is weakly balanced, the first position of Zhengzhou, the core city,is not prominent, and the overall economic development level of Central Plains urban agglomeration is relatively insufficient.(3)The industrial structure of the Central Plains urban agglomeration needs to be further adjusted, the functional intensity of each functional department is unevenly distributed in space, and the development level of service functional departments such as science, education, administration and social services needs to be improved. The number of cities with specialized departments in Central Plains urban agglomeration is relatively small, and the degree of specialization of cities is not high, while the number of specialized cities with functional departments of construction and business is relatively large.(4)The overall network density of Central Plains urban agglomeration is not high, but the overall network density is on the rise. The network density of central cities is obviously higher than that of marginal cities, with obvious core-edge characteristics. The network structure of Central Plains urban agglomeration presents the characteristics of "single core" network structure with Zhengzhou as the core, and the hierarchical structure is obvious.(5)Finally,aiming at the problems existing in the spatial structure of the Central Plains urban agglomeration, the optimization strategies are put forward, which mainly include perfecting the hierarchical scale system of urban agglomeration and developing core cities;Cultivate small and medium-sized cities and improve the level of economic development;Optimize the industrial structure and promote industrial transformation and upgrading;Cultivate new node cities and strengthen the role of radiation.Studying the spatial structure of the Central Plains urban agglomeration can help us understand the development state of the urban agglomeration, and comprehensively explore the spatial organization structure and spatial network structure pattern of the Central Plains urban agglomeration, which is an important basis for the planning, optimization and upgrading of the Central Plains urban agglomeration. The optimization strategy is put forward in order to provide support for the development planning of urban agglomeration, formulate policies to guide the healthy and sustainable development of urban agglomeration, and also provide reference and guidance for the optimization of urban space with the same or similar background as the Central Plains urban agglomeration.
