Research On The Architectural History Of Kunming Workers’ Cultural Palace From The Perspective Of Cultural Memory Theory

The architecture of the Workers’ Cultural Palace is a testimony to the history of China’s urban modernization and an important place of memory for the city’s residents.As one of the earliest public buildings built in Kunming after the founding of the People’s Republic of China,the Kunming Workers’ Palace of Culture is one of the most important buildings in modern Kunming,which has been destroyed and rebuilt,remembered and forgotten many times since its construction.The purpose of this thesis is to clarify the historical lineage of the Kunming Workers’ Cultural Palace,to recover the past space,and to explore the architectural typology of the Palace and the development of the modern city.The research method introduces the cultural memory theory of the German ancient Egyptologists,Mr.and Mrs.Assmann,and analyzes the feasibility of the intervention of cultural memory theory in the study of architectural history.The research mainly starts from the origin and development of the architectural types of the Workers’ Cultural Palace.Taking the Kunming Workers’ Cultural Palace as an example,it explores the construction of cultural memory of the three generations of Kunming’s Workers’ Cultural Palace from the perspective of urban history,architectural space,and identity,and explains the significance of architectural space.In this context of memory,through the material and spiritual dimensions of the Kunming Workers’ Cultural Palace,its architectural history is restored with spatial imagination and spatial construction.Finally,through the critique and reconstruction of space and history,the significance of the Workers’ Culture Palace in the modern and contemporary urban space is summarized.The thesis cuts into the research of architectural history through the theory of cultural memory,places the building of Kunming Workers’ Cultural Palace in the context of modern Kunming’s urbanization process,and uses the architectural history of three generations of Kunming Workers’ Cultural Palace as a carrier to explore the memory and history of the building of Workers’ Cultural Palace.
