| Currently, urban construction has reached a period of stock optimization, and the quality of life of residents has become a focus of relevant policies and research.Residential areas are the basic units of urban life, and the open spaces within residential areas are the type of space with the highest frequency of residents’ daily contact, while also carrying diverse and complex outdoor activities for residents. In the field of open spaces in residential areas, there is a lack of research supported by refined data.Analyzing residents’ behavioral characteristics through long time series and refined analysis can help researchers identify open space problems in residential areas, clarify residents’ needs, and propose solutions. This study is based on long-term video monitoring data of a typical small residential open space, analyzing the behavioral characteristics of residents in small residential open spaces, and exploring the problems and influencing factors of residents in open spaces.Based on the analysis results,an optimization strategy for open space in small residential areas was proposed. The main research content and conclusions are as follows:(1)The article reviews relevant theories and literature such as temporal and spatial behavior theory, environmental behavior theory, and Maslow’s demand theory, and scientifically defines relevant concepts based on the characteristics of open spaces in small residential areas.By analyzing the open space in the case area, the main observation site was selected.(2)The visual image analysis method and spatial stationary point method were used to organize and analyze a large amount of long-term data in the case space.Residents who participate in activities in this open space were labeled with spatial activity behavior for 2 days per month and up to 1 year.By converting 13 hours of monitoring videos per day into 1 frame per minute of images,a total of 18720 images were obtained. On this basis,74291 pieces of residential behavior location information were annotated using visual image analysis. The spatial hotspots of residents’ gender, age, behavior and other characteristics in the case site were corrected and statistically analyzed using software such as Arc GIS.The correlation between typical behavior and spatial distribution characteristics was analyzed, and the problems with the open space of the small residential area and the behavioral characteristics of residents were summarized.(3)Based on the analysis of the temporal and spatial characteristics of the activity data of residents in the case area,it was found that there are certain patterns in the behavioral characteristics of residents in the open space of residential areas, thus exploring the problems in the open space of small residential areas.(1)In terms of time dimension: seasonally, residents’ activities are greatly affected by temperature changes, and the open space facilities in residential areas have a single function, which cannot meet the needs of residents for summer shade and winter warmth; In terms of daily activities, residents gather on rest days, and activities such as playing, resting, and gathering increase. The facilities cannot meet the needs of residents for composite use;In terms of periodicity, the number of residents increases sharply during peak hours, and the limited space area cannot bear the diverse demand for activities.(2)In the spatial dimension,in terms of gender, there is a tendency for male and female residents to engage in activities during peak hours, and male residents often tend to gather in the central region as they are unable to do so;In terms of age group, the range of activities for young children and young residents is larger, which is prone to conflicts with the activities of young,middle-aged,and elderly residents; In terms of behavioral categories, the facilities within the space are important factors in dividing the behavioral activity space. There is a certain correlation between residents’ conversation behavior and exercise behavior,as well as their behavior of resting and taking care of young children. They rely on seats and fitness facilities, but during peak hours, the space at the seats and fitness facilities becomes crowded;Low activity among residents in areas lacking privacy;Playing behavior increases the likelihood of conflicts with other behaviors. In response to these issues, priority should be given to optimization to meet the needs of residents.(4)This study is based on how to fully meet the rich activity space needs of residents in a limited space.Through the behavioral characteristics of residents in the open space of the case area, and combining methods such as questionnaire interviews,an optimization plan is proposed for the open space of the case area.Propose corresponding principles, optimization strategies, and suggestions to support the open space of small residential areas from the five functional areas of the open space.Facilitate residents to engage in activities in the open space of small residential areas, increase spatial vitality, and provide optimization ideas and transformation strategies for other similar cases of open space in small residential areas. |
