With the development of urbanisation, rural habitat improvement is in full swing, and rural construction has always been the focus of national attention. In the process of continuous promotion, some problems have emerged, with the phenomenon of "hollowing out" of the countryside becoming increasingly prominent, the public space in the countryside showing a trend of spatial decline and homogenisation, and the atmosphere of the countryside fading away, which has to a certain extent restricted the villagers’ sense of access, happiness and security. The latest Central Document No.1clearly points out that the construction of a livable, workable and beautiful countryside should be promoted,in line with the villagers’ aspiration for a better life. The development of rural public space should be combined with the aspirations of the villagers, the main users of the space, and guided in the right way to promote better rural development. In this paper,we firstly study the theory of environmental behaviour and the content of rural public space, determine the content of rural public space research, and then summarise the current problems of rural public space in Jingzhou City after a comprehensive analysis.Secondly,it is pointed out that the planning of rural public space should follow the principles of behavioural demand, functional coupling, perceived comfort and regional characteristics, taking into account the influencing factors of rural public space in Jingzhou. On the basis of the above research, planning strategies are proposed to build public spaces that meet the villagers’ conceptual awareness and behavioural needs. Finally,an empirical study is carried out in Xinyang Village,Wangqiao Town,to plan its public space according to the strategy and create a good spatial environment to enhance public interaction among villagers. The main findings and results of the study are as follows:(1)Through questionnaires, behavioural observations and interviews to understand the villagers’ satisfaction with the use and psychological needs, the data was collated and summarised to systematically sort out the current development profile of rural public spaces and villagers’ activity behaviour in Jingzhou City.Based on the environment, people, and villagers’ activity behaviour, the current situation of rural public spaces in Jingzhou city is characterised by a single functional application, ineffective overall use, weakened villagers’ subjectivity, and lack of culture.(2)Based on the close connection between the environment, people and behaviour, the planning strategy of optimising the overall level of space, improving the arrangement of supporting facilities, enriching the experience of the environment and guiding villagers to participate together is proposed according to the problem-oriented and goal-oriented approach,so as to meet the needs of villagers in material and spiritual aspects and enhance their sense of identity and belonging to the public space.(3)Through field investigation, the strategy is applied to the planning and design of various public spaces to promote the development and construction of the countryside,in response to the existing problems of public spaces in Xinyang Village of Wangqiao Town.
