The rapid development of urbanization in China over the past two decades has led to the construction of a large number of centralized farmers’ settlements with the aim of improving the efficiency of land use, which plays a good role in alleviating the shortage of urban land, integrating vacant land in rural areas and improving the quality of villagers’ living environment. However,in the process of building and putting into use centralized farmers’ settlements, homogenization problems,as well as the mismatch between settlement space and residents’living needs due to "top-down" unified planning and design have emerged, breaking people’s original social relationships and regional attributes, causing confusion of personal perception and lack of sense of belonging. In view of this, this study investigates the factors affecting the design of public space in farmers’ residential areas in Yangzhou City in terms of economic development, social relations and regional characteristics, constructs an evaluation system and proposes a renovation design strategy in order to provide guidance for research and practice related to the renovation of public space in farmers’ residential areas. This paper carries out research from the following aspects:First of all, this paper studies the literature and theories related to public space in farmers’concentrated settlements, compares the current situation of domestic with foreign researches,as well as practice cases, explores the shortcomings of the current research field, and searches for breakthrough points. On the basis of the research on the construction and development of concentrated farmers’ settlements, the transformation of social relations in the vernacular, and the special culture of Yangzhou and the needs of residents, the paper adopts a combination of both qualitative and quantitative methods to conduct targeted research on public space of six typical settlements, and clarify the characteristics of Yangzhou’s concentrated farmers’settlements and their public spaces’problems, such as the chaotic layout of roads, uneven distribution of squares, lack of regional culture and insufficient supporting facilities.Secondly, the evaluation process is determined by comparing the evaluation methods.Using the characteristics and problems from the above analysis, the evaluation index elements are combined with relevant design standards and literature to build a three-level model of public space evaluation index system for Yangzhou farmers’ residential areas with the framework of "target level-scheme level-criterion level".By applying the hierarchical analysis method to calculate the weights of each index element and prioritize them, the public space renovation strategy is proposed with reference to the principles of public space renovation in Yangzhou farmers’ concentrated residential areas, and the public space renovation strategy is proposed to create an all-age activity site, graded and perfect living support, safe and smooth road environment, characteristic cultural facilities, coordinated and rich landscape environment and intelligent and reliable safety facilities. Finally,In this retrofit design practice,an open farmer settlement and a closed one in Yangzhou were selected. The public space indicators of the selected settlements are evaluated by using the spatial sentence method, residents’ scores and field research. To address the current deficiencies,we propose a special renovation design for the general layout and major nodes using the renovation strategy. The original indicators are evaluated after the renovation, and the results are recognized by the residents and society, thus verifying the feasibility of the renovation strategy.Through concrete design practice, this study is transformed into a reference design guideline that enriches and complements the related fields.
