Guided by the trend of modern functionalism construction, the vitality of some formal public spaces in China’s cities is gradually weakening.Xi’an Huifang is a gathering area of Hui residents with the most compact density and the longest history in Guanzhong area.It is located in the north of the bell and Drum Tower Square in the northwest of Xi’an inner city.Three important urban axes,Tang axis,Ming and Qing axis and Xi’an axis, intersect here.Huifang street and lane space has typical characteristics of traditional streets and lanes, such as path network, high density and mixed functions. As the generator of residents’ daily life, street space is faced with the dual dilemma of insufficient spontaneous power inside Huifang and the impact of consumer culture outside Huifang. The main purpose of this paper is to summarize the basic data of Huifang street and lane form, sort out the historical evolution, current characteristics and form types of street and lane space form, and explore the essential problems and optimization strategies of Huifang street and lane space based on this. The full paper consists of three parts. The first part is a theoretical overview, mainly focusing on the theoretical overview of street space morphology and morphological typology. From the review of domestic and international research,it can be seen that the research on street morphology is mainly divided into three categories: qualitative, definite and quantitative, and the research on the geometric and topological morphology of streets is carried out from the behavioural, physical and perceptual dimensions respectively. The second part is an overview of the research object, namely the evolution and current situation of the street morphology of Huifang in Xi’an.Firstly, the historical evolution of the street form of Huifang and the factors influencing it are collated.Secondly, based on the density distribution of POI nuclei along the streets, the space of Huifang streets and alleys is initially classified into three types: commercial-consumer,mixed commercial-residential and residential-living,and the primary morphological data of their bottom, side and top interfaces are sorted out.The third part is the core of the thesis, which is the typological analysis of the streets and alleys in Huifang from three dimensions: physical, behavioural and perceptual morphological characteristics. The physical dimension of street morphology refers to the morphological characteristics described by the data obtained through traditional research methods, such as small public spaces and secondary contours along the street. The behavioural dimension refers to the morphological characteristics of the streets and alleys, which are described by the activities of people in the streets and the functional distribution of the streets and alleys crawled by the streetscape data obtained from the field research. The perceptual dimension refers to the morphological characteristics described by the streets’ green visual index and sky visibility index obtained from the streetscape data crawling. The study is conducted on fourteen main streets in Hui Fang, which are distributed in a tessellated pattern, with some homogeneous commonalities and heterogeneous differences in cross-sectional comparisons.Overall, through the classification of physical, behavioral and perceptual dimensions of the street space of Huifang, this paper sums up the multi-dimensional characteristics of the commercial, mixed and residential street space in Huifang area, and explores the essential problems and optimization strategies of the street space of Huifang,so as to contribute little to the space renewal of Huifang.
