Research On The City Form Of Linhai Based On Morpho-typological Analysis

Morpho-Typology is an approach combined with the research of Conzenian School and the Italian Architectural School,through which provides the basis of landscape management methods in urban area.Experiences have been accumulated through studies of European cities,but cases in China are few.This thesis therefore seeks to explore the possibility of its application in Chinese cities.In recent years,the form of the cities has undergone drastic changes with rapid expansion.In this process,cities are gradually lose its own identity as new buildings with no local characteristics are being built.Linhai,as one of the cities in the List of Precious Chinese Historico-Cultural Cities and a famous manufacturing center,is also facing the general problems mentioned above while the study of the city form is scarce.In this thesis,the city Linhai,as a sample to apply Morpho-Typology approaches,is fully studied in order to understand the formation of the built form and its mechanism,which provides the basis of urban design and planning strategies.The two body parts of this thesis is based on 2 ranges or scales: Taizhoufu Prefectural City and modern Linhai.The former is aimed to understand the history of the formation and evolution of traditional cities through the study of morphological typology of urban historical areas,and to provide a basis for the determination of the scope of historical protection.The latter is aimed to studies the characteristics of the city form in overall urban scale,probes into the value of applying Morpho-Typology theory in modern urban development conditions and scales and the re-examination the validity of urban planning and design work.The study is developed under two dimensions: Diachronically,study the evolution with the recognition of distinct cultural periods,and synchronically,based on town plan,building form and land use of the built form,trace existing forms back to the underlying formative processes and interpreting them accordingly.A representative area is selected to verify the uniformity of morphological types in micro scales.
