Chongqing was the largest traditional water terminal and trade hub in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River, and the only inland port city in the late Qing Empire. The opening of the port was the process by which traditional Chinese society was disciplined and baptized by modern society, and it was also the window of opportunity for China to start its own modernization process. As a cross-shore extension of the mother city of Yuzhong,Nanan was the area where foreign companies were relatively concentrated after the opening of Chongqing in the late Qing Dynasty, and was the site of the only Japanese Concession that existed briefly in the Chinese hinterland. As part of the new urban area,Nanan has its own unique characteristics-it is different from the ancient iteration of the Yuzhong Peninsula, and unlike Jiangbei, which had the rule of the City Hall,Nan’an is a spatially "urban" and "rural" area.In terms of space,Nan’an is a zone where "city" and "township" are combined,in terms of mechanism,it is a zone where "modernity" and "non-modernity" are combined, and in terms of concept,it is a zone where "new" and "old" are combined. In terms of concept,it is a zone where "new" and "old" are combined. What happened to such a zone in the process of formation and transformation of modern urban space? And what kind of influence has it had?The article aims to analyze the historical evolution of urban space on the Nan’an of Chongqing from the perspective of urban space, taking urban morphology as the main spatial carrier, urban morphology as the theoretical vision, image analysis as the specific method, historical images as the research material, and specific fieldwork, and to sort out the formation and transformation of urban space on the south bank of Chongqing in the process of modern history. The text is divided into three main parts and six chapters. The first part is an overall overview of the research content, which is divided into two chapters: the first chapter is the introduction, through which the main content of the study and the innovation points are clear. The second chapter is the main theory chapter, through which the research path and entry point are established. In the second part,we analyze and discuss the urban spatial transformation of the modern South Coast from the surface to the inside with the help of historical maps and images of the city, and from the three levels of physical space form, morphological changes, and inner concepts.Chapter 3 is divided into three chapters: through historical maps and photographs of the city,it compares the existing spatial forms in the study area and summarizes the morphological characteristics.Chapter 4 focuses on the transformation of urban morphology, discusses the formation process of morphological characteristics through morphological changes, and summarizes three stages of new spaces entering the old urban landscape, such as "integration","planting",and "attachment";Chapter 5,on conceptual space, explores the intrinsic relationship between conceptual and physical space from the spatial perceptions and concepts embodied in public opinion maps and imagery maps.In the fifth chapter, the conceptual space is explored from the spatial perceptions and concepts embodied in the opinion maps and imagery maps, and the inner relationship between conceptual and material space is explored. Finally, through a review of the satellite town planning in the Ten-Year Construction Plan for the Accompanying Capital, the reproduction of material space driven by inner concepts is discussed, forming a logical closure of the main narrative section. The third part is the conclusion, which is a summary of the research results, methods, and shortcomings and an outlook for future research.
