| Since the period of ancient Sichuan and early Qin dynasty, materials and cultures have been accumulated in West Sichuan Gardens, where unique spatial structures and cultural conventions have developed. As cultural and spiritual carrier of west Sichuan Province,West Sichuan Gardens not only have a long history and rich aesthetic cultures, but also show distinct regional features, thus reflecting West Sichuan people s pursuits for ideal life.At present, the research of west Sichuan Gardens, which is still in the primary stage, focuses on subjectively describing and evaluating historical records, folk crafts, spatial architectural layouts and landscaping techniques.Owing to limitations of technical conditions, very little objective research has been scientifically and quantitatively performed, thus inevitably impacted by subjective and perceptual understanding. As a consequence, the research outcomes are not so objective and scientific. In this paper, only the space of West Sichuan Gardens is explored by “space syntax”,thereby making sure that results are objective and real by greatly eliminating non-spatial factors and people s subjective feelings.Based on the interpretations given in studying Harrods with space syntax, this paper firstly defines the “visual layer” and the “feasible layer” of West Sichuan Gardens.By quantifying Depth Map,it analyzes the space of West Sichuan Gardens more clearly by graphic methods. In investigating, summarizing and sorting out elements of West Sichuan Gardens, namely buildings, mountains, rocks, waters and plants in combination with physical intermediaries. At first, lots of related variables are calculated for the space from the visual perspective. Then, the measurements are comparatively analyzed to explore the impacts of landscaping elements upon spatial visions and their relationships with inner structures of garden space.Subsequently, the spatial quantification results on the visible layer and the feasible layer are studied.Besides, spatial features of West Sichuan Gardens are summarized. In combination with theoretical foundations and methods of space syntax, this paper simply analyzes and selects famous Sichuan gardens. At last,“Du Fu Cottage”,one of typical representatives of West Sichuan Gardens,is theoretically studied and empirically studied. In the theoretical research, the site is comprehensively understood through literature review and field survey. Its floor plan is vectorised at 1/1 and a 2D model is drawn.Next, many related spatial variables of the cottage are calculated for the visible layer and the feasible layer. At last, numerical values of graphic analysis and quantification are determined,as shown in the graphs. In addition, the spatial structures are quantified in specific numbers. In the empirical survey, positions are selected for 40 bayonets of gardens in a relatively balanced manner,in order to statistically analyze the distribution of visitor flow while recording features and models of visitors movements. Finally, results of the survey and quantitative analysis are comparatively verified,so as to explore internal relationships among spatial structures of the gardens, visual relationships and behaviors of visiting gardens. As a whole, this paper not only puts forward more scientific, rigorous, objective and rational reconstruction suggestions concerning technical feasibility of the space syntax and summarizes methods applicable to space of West Sichuan Gardens, but also further discusses new ways for inheriting and developing outstanding design ideas and landscaping techniques of classical West Sichuan Gardens.Apart from providing a new mode of thinking for analyzing and exploring the space of West Sichuan Gardens, this paper also make multi-dimensional perspectives, design and analysis techniques for contemporary practices of West Sichuan Gardens. At last, new methods for inheriting and developing West Sichuan Gardens are obtained. |
