At present, driven by economic globalization,Global Value Chain(GVC)division model has become the new normal of the international division system.Under GVC division model,China’s manufacturing has been in a low value-added and high energy consuming production chain for a long time due to its low labor cost and abundant resources, resulting in a serious imbalance between China’s trade gains and carbon emissions costs. In this context, how to reduce the embodied carbon emissions intensity(ECI)of China’s manufacturing export and achieve low-carbon production in the manufacturing by enhancing China’s GVC position has become an urgent and important issue to be solved.By measuring the embodied carbon emissions intensity of China’s manufacturing export and the GVC position index,it is found that the overall embodied carbon emissions intensity of China’s manufacturing export shows an inverted "V" shaped evolution trend, with both forward and backward production lengths showing an upward trend.Under the combined effect of forward and backward production lengths, the GVC position of China’s manufacturing fluctuates steadily. On this basis,it is found that the position of GVC has direct and indirect impacts on the embodied carbon emissions intensity of export. The indirect impact refers to the impact of the environmental effects of trade on the embodied carbon emissions intensity of export.Using the data of 16 manufacturing sectors in China from 2001 to 2018,this paper finds through empirical test that:(1)The improvement of GVC position will reduce the embodied carbon emissions intensity of China’s manufacturing export.(2)Compared with technology intensive manufacturing, the improvement of the GVC position of non-technology intensive industries is more conducive to the reduction of the embodied carbon emissions intensity of China’s manufacturing export.(3)Compared with the embodied carbon emissions intensity of export caused by high-income countries, the improvement of the GVC position will reduce the embodied carbon emissions intensity of export caused by low-income countries.(4)The improvement of forward production length is beneficial for reducing the embodied carbon emissions intensity of export trade, while the improvement of backward production length is not conducive to reducing the embodied carbon emissions intensity of export.(5)The technological effect will promote the improvement of GVC position and suppress the embodied carbon emissions intensity of export, while the moderating effect of scale effect and structural effect is not significant. Finally, based on theoretical analysis and empirical testing,China’s manufacturing can improve its GVC position by accelerating the process of manufacturing technology innovation and changing the export focus of China’s manufacturing, thereby reducing the embodied carbon emissions intensity of export.
