Research On The Impact Of Farmers Engaging In Organic Farming On Their Well-being In Key Ecological Function Area

Improving the well-being of farmers is a prerequisite for the development of organic farming.However,there are few research literature in this field,which leads to the unclear acknowledge of the relationship between farmers engaging in organic farming and their well-being.In view of the widespread concern of organic farming,it is necessary to carry out systematic research on the relationship between engaging in organic farming and farmers’ well-being,in order to provide useful knowledge for people to understand whether farmers engage in or reject organic farming and for the public sector to design support policies to promote farmers to engage in organic farming.Based on the review of the relevant literature,This paper constructs the relationship model between farmers engaging in organic farming on their well-being,and the relationship model of farmers’ attitude towards the relationship between engaging in organic farming and well-being and their intention of engaging in organic farming,then puts forward the corresponding research hypothesis.Based on the survey data of questionnaires from 450 sample farmers in Guzhang County,Baojing County,Huayuan County and Yongshun County,the ecological function areas of biodiversity and soil and water conservation in Wuling mountain area.This paper applies Ordered Probit model to analyze the relationship model and examine the research hypothesis.The results are as follows:(1)engaging in organic farming has a significant positive impact on farmers’ well-being;(2)engaging in organic farming has a significant positive impact on farmers’ annual net income of family,agricultural income satisfaction,health satisfaction,environmental quality satisfaction,food safety satisfaction and neighborhood relationship.Among them,it has the greatest impact on “ annual net income of family ”,and has the least impact on“ neighborhood relationship ”;(3)farmers’ agricultural income satisfaction,health satisfaction,environmental quality satisfaction,food safety satisfaction,family relationship and the proportion of non-agricultural income in annual net income of family have a significant positive impact on their well-being.Among them,“ agricultural income satisfaction ” has the greatest impact on farmers’ well-being,and “ the proportion of non-agricultural income in annual net income of family ” has the smallest impact;(4)farmers’ attitude towards “ farmers engaging in organic farming will make them happier ”,“ organic production can get family’s support ”,“ organic production can get neighborhood’s support ” and “ organic production can increase job opportunities ” have a significant positive impact on their intention of engaging in organic farming.Among them,farmers’ attitude towards “ farmers engaging in organic farming will make them happier ” has the greatest impact on their intention of engaging in organic farming,and the attitude of farmers to “ organic production can increase job opportunities ” has the smallest impact;(5)Party members and village cadres in the family has a significant positive impact on their well-being;(6)marriage status and being in the organic product certification demonstration zone significantly positively affect farmers’ intention of engaging in organic farming.Among them,marriage status has the greatest impact on farmers’ intention of engaging in organic farming;(7)engaging in organic farming has a more significant effect on improving the well-being of women,high income,high education level,non organic product certification demonstration zone and elderly farmers;(8)the attitude of farmers in organic product certification demonstration zone to “ farmers engaging in organic farming will make them happier ” has a more significant impact on their intention of engaging in organic farming.The results show that the research hypothesis of this paper has been well verified,and the following conclusions are obtained:(1)farmers engaging in organic farming can improve their well-being;(2)engaging in organic farming can improve farmers’ income,health,safety and social relations;(3)income is the most important component of farmers’ well-being;(4)farmers’ positive attitude towards the relationship between engaging in organic farming and well-being can improve their intention of engaging in organic farming;(5)the characteristics of farmers’ background factors affect their well-being,their intention of engaging in organic farming,the relationship between farmers engaging in organic farming and their well-being,and the relationship between farmers’ attitude towards the relationship between engaging in organic farming and well-being and their intention of engaging in organic farming.Based on the above conclusions,this paper puts forward policy suggestions to promote the development of organic farming and improve the well-being of farmers:(1)formulate and implement the policies for organic farming,increase financial subsidies,and improve financial policy support;(2)strengthen the publicity of the positive impact of farmers engaging in organic farming on their well-being,and improve farmers’ positive attitude towards the relationship between engaging in organic farming and farmers’ well-being;(3)strengthen the training and education of farmers and provide guidance on organic production technology;(4)pay attention to the welfare demands of conventional farmers and organic farmers,and provide differentiated welfare supply measures;(5)attach the exemplary role of Party members and village cadres and organic product certification demonstration zones.
