The negative environmental externalities brought by the leap-forward economic development have become an important external factor that restricts the sustainable development of China.The potential deepseated crisis of climate change has promoted the goal of "double carbon" to become a national strategy,forcing the region to seek emission reduction paths to achieve green and low-carbon circular development.As a high-yield land of carbon emissions,western provinces and autonomous regions are facing an arduous task of emission reduction.Under the pressure of "double carbon",green technology innovation has become an important support for a new round of technological revolution and the realization of green and low-carbon transformation,helping to overcome the problem of carbon emission reduction and realize green recovery.This thesis scientifically explores the impact of green technology innovation on carbon emissions in western provinces,hoping to provide some ideas for reducing carbon dioxide emissions in western provinces,provide guidance and support for western provinces to get rid of path dependence and optimize the allocation of resource input and utilization,and have positive significance for solving the contradiction between development and environment in western provinces.This thesis is divided into seven parts: The first part introduces the macro background and overall research ideas.The second part clarifies the theoretical analysis framework of the impact of green technology innovation on carbon emissions.The third part comprehensively evaluates the development status,spatial evolution trend and related characteristics of green technology innovation and carbon emissions in western provinces.Based on the panel data of 11 western provinces from 2005 to 2020,the fourth part empirically tests the direct impact,transmission mechanism and nonlinear impact of green technology innovation on carbon emissions by using FGLS,stepwise regression intermediary method and threshold effect model,so as to enhance the accuracy of the empirical results.The fifth part verifies the industrial heterogeneity and regional heterogeneity of the impact of green technology innovation on carbon emissions in western provinces,so as to clarify the choice of "sports" emission reduction or "adapting to local conditions and actions".The sixth part puts forward the countermeasures and suggestions for promoting green technology innovation and realizing carbon emission reduction in western provinces according to the empirical results of the article.The seventh part is the conclusion and prospect of the article.The research results show that:(1)From the current situation of green technology innovation,the number of green patent applications in western provinces showed a linear growth trend in the early stage,but it declined slightly in the later stage,and it rebounded again in 2020,and the overall innovation activity remained positive,with an average annual growth rate of over 20%,decreasing from Chengdu-Chongqing economic circle and Shaanxi as the center to the north and south;The overall value of green technology innovation efficiency is low,only Chongqing’s efficiency value exceeds 1,and other provinces show "lack of efficiency" and "strong fluctuation",and the efficiency of green technology innovation is unstable.(2)From the perspective of total carbon emissions,the total carbon emissions of western provinces still tend to increase,but the growth rate slows down and the total carbon emissions of some provinces have decreased significantly,and the total carbon emissions have increased from Qing ning gan province to surrounding provinces.(3)In terms of correlation characteristics,the average correlation degree between green technology innovation level and carbon emissions in western provinces is 0.5993,and the order of correlation degree is Xinjiang > Qinghai > Inner Mongolia > Guizhou > Guangxi > Shaanxi > Ningxia > Gansu >Yunnan > Sichuan > Chongqing;The average correlation degree between green technology innovation efficiency and carbon emissions in western provinces is 0.76,and the order of correlation degrees is Guizhou >Sichuan > Inner Mongolia > Yunnan > Guangxi > Gansu > Chongqing > Ningxia > Shaanxi > Qinghai >Xinjiang,which has significant regional differences.(4)From the impact results,the development and progress of green technology innovation in western provinces can effectively reduce regional carbon emissions,in which the impact of unit green technology innovation level on carbon emissions is lower than that of green technology innovation efficiency,but the impact coefficient is 0.0157 standard deviation higher,and green technology innovation can reduce carbon emissions through three paths: energy structure adjustment,industrial structure rationalization and industrial structure upgrading;(5)From the threshold effect,when the government support is the threshold,the impact of green technology innovation level on carbon emissions presents a "inverted U" nonlinear change,but the negative impact of green technology innovation level only has a trend and has not significantly reduced carbon emissions;The negative impact of green technology innovation efficiency on carbon emissions has turned.After crossing the threshold of government support,the negative impact of green technology innovation efficiency on carbon emissions is higher.When environmental regulation is taken as the threshold variable,the impact of green technology innovation level on carbon emissions presents a significant "U-shaped" nonlinear trend;The influence of green technology innovation efficiency on carbon emissions has turned to a turning point.After crossing the threshold of environmental regulation,the influence coefficient of green technology innovation efficiency on carbon emissions has decreased significantly.When the market level is taken as the threshold variable,there is no significant threshold for the impact of green technology innovation on carbon emissions;(6)From the perspective of heterogeneity,firstly,the total carbon emission of heavily polluting industries in western provinces accounts for more than 85% of the total industrial pollution,and green technology innovation plays a significant role in reducing carbon emission of heavily polluting industries.With the decrease of industrial pollution,the level of green technology innovation is weakened,even leading to a "green paradox",while the impact of green technology innovation efficiency on industrial carbon reduction is still significant;Secondly,green technology innovation has a more significant effect on carbon reduction and emission reduction in high-carbon emission areas,and relatively speaking,the effect of green technology innovation efficiency on carbon emission reduction is more universal.Based on the above,this thesis puts forward corresponding policy suggestions from the perspectives of promoting green technological innovation and reducing carbon emissions,aiming at the input of green technological innovation elements,green technological innovation protection,green technological innovation environment,industrial structure optimization,clean energy structure,appropriate government support and environmental regulation,so as to promote green technological innovation in western provinces and regions,expect to reduce carbon emissions in western provinces and regions,realize green low-carbon circular development in western provinces and regions,and achieve the goal of "double carbon".
