In recent years,China’s economic growth mode has changed from high-speed growth to high-quality growth, and the economic growth mode at the expense of the environment has gradually been eliminated. As a new economic concept, digital economy is conducive to the technological innovation of traditional industries and reduces the emission of air pollutants from the production side. Therefore, realizing the transformation and upgrading of the digital economy and industrial structure and promoting the governance of the ecological environment has become an important topic. This paper selects 30 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions(excluding Tibet,Hong Kong,Macao and Taiwan)in China from 2011 to 2020 as the research object, empirically tests the impact of the digital economy on air pollution, and finds that government environmental protection and industrial structure upgrading play a part of intermediary role in the process of digital economy suppressing air pollution. At the same time,it examines the heterogeneous impact of the digital economy on air pollution from the regional, educational level and the level of digital economy development index. The main research conclusions are as follows:(1)Typical characteristics of digital economy and air pollution. From 2011 to2020,China’s digital economy development index showed an overall upward trend, with obvious regional differences in development, with the eastern region taking the lead and the central region superior to the western region; The air pollution index is decreasing year by year, and there is a significant positive correlation in space.(2)The effect of various variables in the influence mechanism of digital economy on air pollution. The development of digital economy has significantly inhibited air pollution, which shows that the development of digital economy is conducive to improving environmental quality and reducing air pollution. The level of economic development, urbanization rate,FDI and energy efficiency have significantly inhibited air pollution.Population density promotes air pollution, and the high concentration of population density will increase the emission of polluting gases and worsen the environmental quality.(3)The digital economy is an intermediary mechanism that affects air pollution through industrial structure upgrading and government environmental protection. The digital economy can play a part of intermediary role by promoting government environmental protection to suppress air pollution. The government can effectively use digital data to monitor the emission reduction of enterprises in the whole process, and reduce the emission of atmospheric pollutants from the source of enterprises. The digital economy can promote the internal transformation of the industry through the upgrading of the industrial structure, reduce the operation of high energy consumption equipment, achieve traditional technological innovation, and reduce air pollution.(4)The impact of digital economy on air pollution is heterogeneous. The eastern, central and western regions have significantly suppressed air pollution. With the higher level of regional economic development, the stronger the inhibition effect is.The eastern region is leading, and the central region is superior to the western region. The more intensive colleges and universities, the higher the level of education, the stronger the inhibitory effect of digital economy on air pollution. At the same time, the greater the degree of agglomeration of digital economy, the stronger the inhibition effect on air pollution.Based on the above conclusions, the article finally puts forward relevant policy recommendations from the aspects of promoting digital development, balancing resource allocation and optimizing industrial structure.Figure [15] table [18] reference [78]...
