The rapid economic and social development and the acceleration of urbanization have led to the continuous growth of domestic waste production.Which has brought enormous pressure to the back-end waste treatment and the high-quality and sustainable development of the economy and society.Faced with the phenomenon of "garbage siege" and the "load-bearing operation" of waste disposal, environmental policy has become an important starting point for governance. The release of the mandatory waste separation policy has further unleashed the vitality of the circular economy and brought room for development to the waste disposal industry.Residents are the main body of behavior-separation and disposing-at the front end of the waste treatment industry chain.Their behavioral responses to relevant policies determine the difficulty of subsequent waste disposal. The waste separation at source is a direct reflection of the policy effect, which is conducive to improving the operation efficiency of the waste treatment industry chain. Therefore,it is of great significance to clarify the response mechanism of residents’ waste separation behavior.Based on the research idea of "theoretical research-empirical research-countermeasures and suggestions",from the perspective of behavioral economics, this paper focuses on the behavioral response mechanism of residents’ waste separation policy. This paper constructs a conceptual model of individual policy behavior response, and analyzes the influence mechanism of residents’ psychological factors on behavior response in the face of waste separation policy.By adopting the comprehensive analysis method of public survey based on social network and personal survey based on questionnaire, this paper obtained the data of 46 pilot cities’ microblogs and 1865 questionnaire data, and used structural equation model to carry out regression analysis to gain an in-depth understanding of residents’ behavioral response to waste sorting policies.First, the results of social media data analysis and personal questionnaire survey results are displayed through charts to analyze the current situation of residents’ cognition and attitude towards the current waste separation policy;second,to ensure the validity of the empirical analysis results, the reliability and validity of the questionnaire data are tested. This lays the foundation for the subsequent factor analysis;finally, the structural equation model regression analysis is carried out to explore the behavioral impact mechanism of the public on the waste separation policy. The research results show that in the face of waste separation policy, the public’s daily average sentiment value is lower than 0.5 during the survey period, the public attitude is negative, and the acceptance is low.And the longer the policy is implemented, the lower the public attitude. The public prefers guiding policies, and public negative emotions are stronger in cities where mandatory policies are implemented. In the process of implementing the waste separation policy, the negative emotions of the public mainly come from the lack of separation knowledge, imperfect supporting facilities, and supervision penalties. In addition, environmental awareness, subjective norm, and perceived behavior control all have impact on behavior intention, and attitude and perceived policy efficacy have a strong mediating role in this process.
