Objective: To explore the effect of NUTREND L-carnitine exercise supplement combined with aerobic resistance training on the physical and mental health of healthy college students through a randomized controlled trial. Methods: 60 healthy college students were randomly divided into two groups: aerobic resistance training combined with L-carnitine sports drink, and aerobic resistance training combined with placebo,30 in each group. Each group had eight weeks of exercise training, three times a week, and about 40 minutes each time.Take NUTREND drink(mainly L-carnitine)and placebo within 10~30 days before exercise.Physical and mental health related indicators were tested before and 8 weeks after the intervention. The main indicators were physical fitness indicators(maximum oxygen uptake, muscle strength, flexibility),mental health indicators(Symptom Checklist 90(SCL-90),Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index(PSQI),and Chinese College Students’ Adaptation Scale(CCSAS)),Secondary indicators were body composition indicators(height, weight,BMI,body fat rate, lean weight, body moisture, waist hip ratio). Results: Among the physical fitness indexes, after 8 weeks of intervention, the maximum oxygen uptake, back muscle strength and grip strength of the experimental group and the control group were significantly improved compared with those before intervention(P<0.05).There was no significant change in flexibility indexes between the two groups. The results of inter group covariance showed that after 8 weeks of intervention, the maximum oxygen uptake(improvement value: 3.81 ± 3.32,P<0.05)and grip strength(improvement value: 1.76 ± 1.31,P<0.01)of the experimental group were better than those of the control group. In the mental health indicators, compared with those before intervention, after 8 weeks of intervention, the experimental group and the control group have significantly improved in terms of SCL-90 total score, obsessivecompulsive disorder, interpersonal sensitivity, paranoia, psychotic and other(sleep disorders and poor diet),PSQI total score,CCSAS total score, interpersonal applicability, school applicability, emotional applicability, and satisfaction(P < 0.01 or P < 0.05).In addition, the experimental group has significantly improved in terms of somatization, depression, and terror,There was significant improvement in learning applicability and self applicability(all P<0.05),and there was significant improvement in anxiety and job selection applicability in the control group(all P<0.05).Covariance results showed that after 8 weeks of intervention, the experimental group had better improvement in somatization(improvement value:-1.17 ± 1.14,P < 0.01),total PSQI score(improvement value:-2.14 ± 1.90,P < 0.05),learning applicability(improvement value: 3.14 ±4.51,P < 0.05)and emotional applicability(improvement value: 1.07 ± 3.70,P < 0.01).In the body composition indicators, compared with those before intervention, after 8 weeks of intervention, the experimental group and the control group had significant improvement in BMI,body fat rate, fat volume and waist hip ratio(P<0.05),but there was no statistical difference between the groups. Conclusion: Aerobic resistance training can promote the development of college students’ physical and mental health. However, the combination of L-carnitine and aerobic resistance training has a more significant effect on the physical and mental health of college students than the simple aerobic resistance training, mainly reflected in the maximum oxygen uptake, muscle strength, psychological condition, sleep status, and adaptation status. |
