Framework Analysis Of Genetically Modified Subjects In People's Daily(1988-2020)

The genetically modified(GM)issue is a controversial public topic.It is not only related to science,but also related to political,economic and ethical aspects.The richness and controversy of the issues have attracted the attention of the mass media.As the mouthpiece of the CPC Central Committee,what kind of issue frame does People's Daily present? Why such a framework? This paper tries to answer these questions.This study will first explore the news framework adopted by people's daily when discussing the issue of genetically modified organisms,as well as their trends.Based on the relevant news texts with "transgenic" as the key word,this study uses the method of semantic network analysis to analyze the transgenic related news of people's daily from 1988 to 2020.It is found that the time context can be divided into four periods: 1988-1998,1999-2003,2004-2016,2017-2020;the semantic network presentation of the transgenic news in these four periods respectively,combined with the previous literature summary,it is found that people's daily adopts "public responsibility","economic vision","conflict","strategy" and "social responsibility" There are nine framework types,including development,science /technology uncertainty,current situation,out of control science and science popularization,and six of them can be subdivided into two to three sub frameworks.Then,the researcher analyzed 189 news texts with the word "genetically modified" in their headlines one by one.Statistics show that "public responsibility" is the most commonly used frame type in the news framework of transgenic topics in China.The researchers further found that in 189 news texts,there are traces of the use and combination of frames,which can be summarized into nine discussion modes,which can be further summarized into three core frameworks,namely "progress","potential harm" and "problem solving".Finally,according to the time period divided by the previous article,this paper explores the changes of these three core frameworks and discussion modes in each time period,tries to answer why there are such changes,and puts forward some suggestions for news reports on related topics.
