The array antenna is composed of a large number of array elements and has gotten rapid developed with its unique advantages.In practical applications,some of array elements will be failed for various reasons.This results in a drop in antenna performance.In some severe cases,the array pattern will be distorted.There are two practical and effective remedies.The first one is to replace the failure unit directly.But sometimes it is difficult,even impossible.The second one is to make use of compensation algorithms to repair the performance.It is known that the excitation of phased array antenna is controllable.While the position of the failure element is known,we try to recover the actual pattern of the array by re-optimizes the excitation of the remaining elements.The main research results are summarized as follows:Firstly,the fundamental theory of array antenna is introduced and the failure element model is established.The analysis shows that the influence of failure elements on antenna pattern is mainly reflected in the sharp rise of sidelobe level.In the paper,a brain storm optimization algorithm is applied to array element failure correction for the first time.The basic principle of the algorithm is introduced and the performance of it is tested.Secondly,array failure compensation algorithm of linear array antenna is studied.According to the different spacing distance of array elements,the discussion of linear array is divided into uniform form and non-uniform form.On this basis,considering non-subarray and subarray,the array failure compensation algorithm under wide angle scanning is studied.Then,the model of wideband linear array is proposed and two compensation algorithms are designed.The simulation results show the feasibility of the compensation algorithms.At last,array failure compensation algorithm for planar array is discussed.An example of the periodic array with Dolph-Chebyshev's aperture distribution is given to propose a compensation algorithm after its failure.Next,the models of circular planar array and rectangular planar array are proposed and an effective compensating approach is studied.Then,the modeling method of wideband array is given and compensation algorithm which is suitable for wideband array is studied.The results show that the number of failure elements and the scanning angle of the array will affect the compensating approach.The array failure compensation algorithms proposed in this paper can largely correct the distortion pattern,thus the antenna array can be put into use in a degraded performance.
