Guo Xiangsheng was one of the most famous private book collectors in Shanxi Province during the period of the Republic of China.His library collected tens of thousands of rare books,including many of them in song,yuan,Ming and Qing Dynasties.Guo Xiangsheng himself likes to approve books,and he can’t put them down everyday,so his collection has many inscriptions and postscripts.It is undoubtedly very important to study Guo Xiangsheng’s academic thoughts.At the same time,the postscript records Guo Xiangsheng’s protection and restoration of ancient books,which is also worth learning.The first chapter of this paper gives an overview of Guo Xiangsheng’s life experience and writings,and analyzes the writing background of his postscript from two aspects of family and friends.Influenced by his family studies when he was young,Guo Xiangsheng made friends with LAN Chengrong,Tian Jiude and other book collectors when he was old,which made him love collecting books and write inscriptions and postscripts all his life.Finally,the author combs the lost and existing situation of Guo Xiangsheng’s collection.The second part is the research on the contents of the inscriptions and postscripts of Guo Xiangsheng’s collection.There are a large number of inscriptions and postscripts in Guo Xiangsheng’s collection.The contents are not only limited to Literature and history,but also record the reasons for obtaining books,the process of bargaining with vendors,or record the versions of ancient books,introduce and comment on people.The third part focuses on the analysis of the postscript from the perspective of historical philology.Mainly from two aspects of edition and collation.Guo Xiangsheng paid attention to using a variety of methods to distinguish versions,such as taboo,Tibetan printing,paper and ink.His view of edition shows that he attaches importance to the first edition and the famous collection.In the aspect of collation,it focuses on three aspects: collating words,examining historical facts,approving books and proofreading.At the same time,it analyzes the methods Guo Xiangsheng followed in collating ancient books.It advocates the method of proofreading based on live proofreading,and opposes the dead proofreading method adopted by most book collectors since Huang pilei.The fourth part discusses the historical value of Guo Xiangsheng’s collection.One is the historical postscripts with unique views.The second is the comment on the differences between Chinese and Western cultures and systems.Through the analysis and research of Guo Xiangsheng’s inscriptions and postscripts,this paper classifies the contents of the inscriptions and postscripts,and analyzes the value of historical philology contained in the inscriptions and postscripts,so that people can better understand the value of Guo Xiangsheng’s inscriptions and postscripts.
