Since the “Belt and Road” initiative was put forward,Malaysia has paid particular attention to it and has been actively responding to it,and related cooperation projects are also being carried out step by step. However,in 2018,the rotation of political parties in Malaysia showed a different attitude towards the “Belt and Road” initiative. The “New Straits Times” is known as Malaysia's "National Newspaper" and has a wide audience. To a certain extent,it represents Malaysia's attitude towards the "Belt and Road".Studying the discourse characteristics of "The New Straits Times" report on the "Belt and Road" will help understand Malaysia's awareness and attitude towards the initiative, which will lay the foundation for my country to better spread the initiative in the future. This article selects “New Straits Times” reports on the “Belt and Road” from June 1,2015 to June 1,2020 as the research object,a total of 504 effective reports are used to analyze their discourse characteristics and the power relations and ideology behind it based on discourse theory. The full text is divided into five parts, mainly using the methods of discourse analysis and case study, using Fairclough's three-dimensional discourse analysis as the framework of the whole article, and analyzing the samples from the three dimensions of text—discourse practice—social practice. The introduction based on the insight and analysis of the realistic background,it sorts out the relevant research literature at home and abroad, and clarifies the problems to be studied. In Chapter 1,first sort out the 504 sample reports, starting from the number, length and main distribution columns of the reports,to understand the overall situation of the "Belt and Road" report in the “New Straits Times”.In Chapter 2,it analyzes the discourse features such as the use of words and transitivity from the textual dimension, and analyzes the structure of the report with the help of Van Dijk's macrostructure theory. In Chapter 3,it analyzes the different reporting methods of the report and the strategic use of the vague information source of the report quote from the perspective of discourse practice. The fourth chapter analyzes the report from the perspective of discourse practice. In Chapter 4,it nalyzes reports based on the dimensions of social practice, and analyzes the ideology and power relations behind discourse characteristics from the perspectives of the global environment, social background and Malaysia ' s diplomatic strategy. In Chapter 5,it puts forward the discourse optimization path for China to spread “the Belt And Road” initiative to Malaysia based on the discourse analysis above.Through the discourse analysis of the “the Belt And Road” report of the “New Straits Times”,it is found that under the influence of multiple factors such as the global background and Malaysia's own diplomatic strategy, the “New Straits Times”report on the “Belt and Road” shows a complicated and entangled tendency of being mainly positive but always alert to the rise of China.China has the responsibility as a major country, and the original intention of putting forward “the Belt and Road” is to promote exchanges and win-win cooperation around the world, while the media implicitly hide the relationship between ideology and power in the news discourse. Therefore, this article holds that China should grasp the discourse characteristics of the report.First, choose appropriate words to convey accurate values.Second, use the characteristics of discourse skillfully to tell Chinese stories.Third, increase discourse practitioners to disseminate the “Belt and Road” at mutiple levels.Fourth, broaden the dissemination platform and establish a good international image.Only in this way can we better promote the “Belt and Road” initiative.
