The Discourse Research Of CCTV News' "Belt And Road Initiative (BRI)" Report

Under the theoretical framework of Norman Fairclough's critical discourse analysis and Teun A.van Dijk's news discourse analysis,this study explored CCTV's coverage of the Belt and Road Initiative(BRI)in the era of media convergence from the perspective of news production.The study revolved around three dimensions: Text dimension,The discursive dimension and The social practice dimension.In view of CCTV news production mechanism and output path,this study chose its video coverage of BRI as the subject of discourse,systematically classifying the sample,supplementing it with news data from CCTV news' official accounts on Weibo and WeChat,and employing a mixed-methods sequential explanatory design(quantitative first then followed by qualitative).In the quantitative stage,the data were organized and analyzed by means of random sampling,GooSeeker,gsdata.cn,picdata.cn,and SPSS coding.In the qualitative stage,the sample was holistically analyzed using Fairclough's CDA theory and methodology,while the typical cases were qualitatively analyzed using Dijk's news discourse analysis in terms of macro structure,discourse style and rhetoric.The discourse analyses were used in conjunction with interviews to ensure the study's reliability and validity.The introduction presented the research topic based on a review of existing literature.The first chapter was an overview of CCTV news' coverage of BRI by virtue of media convergence.The second chapter,starting from the text dimension,drawing upon Dijk's textual discourse analysis,described the general situation of CCTV news' BRI coverage,and analyzed the news schema structure at the macro level and the textual discourse presentation at the micro level.The third chapter dealt with the discourse construction of the BRI coverage from cognitive,narrative and communicative perspectives in the discursive dimension.The fourth chapter investigated the discourse construction of the BRI coverage in a broader social and cultural context.From meta discourse construction,metaphor and game in the power of discourse to soft power and precision communication in the social practice dimension,this chapter analyzed the role of power and ideology in interfering with,updating and revising CCTV news' BRI coverage.The study finds that CCTV news' BRI coverage in its discourse construction needs to push the boundaries of traditional dissemination and change from seeking ideological coverage of political discourse to embodying the BRI's spirit of cooperation,facilitating exchanges between nations,organizations and ordinary people,and building a community of shared future for mankind.The state television broadcaster CCTV news' BRI coverage not only has the function of disseminating news,but also has a political and cultural responsibility to display a discourse with Chinese characteristics in the process of promoting national image-building and global governance.
