The Straits Times is Singapore's long-standing English-language newspaper.It is one of the most widely distributed newspapers in Singapore and has an extremely important influence.The Straits Times uses high-quality news,influential comments and in-depth analysis to guide readers to news events in Singapore,Southeast Asia and around the world.Singapore is one of the important countries along the “Belt and Road”and is particularly concerned about the “Belt and Road” initiative.This paper uses discourse analysis theory,from the three dimensions of text dimension,discourse practice dimension and social practice dimension,analyzes The Straits Times' report on the “Belt and Road” and understands the power relations and ideology behind the discourse construction and discourse.This article selects all the reports on the “Belt and Road” from The Straits Times during the period from September 2013 to December 2018,with a total of 691 corpora.The specific research ideas are as follows:The first part is mainly to collect statistics on the "Belt and Road" report of The Straits Times.Statistics were published from the number and time of reports and the columns of the reports.Understand the distribution of 691 corpus in each year and the characteristics of the main columns,so as to grasp the situation of the report more clearly.The second part analyzes the corpus from Fairgrave's textual dimension.It mainly starts from two aspects: lexical analysis and physical analysis.Through the analysis of excessive lexicalization and vocabulary use,we can understand the Straits Times' s awareness of the “Belt and Road” initiative.Through the analysis of the transitivity of the text,we can understand the different strategies of the Straits Times in shaping the image of China and Singapore.The fourth part analyzes the corpus from Fairvalf's social practice dimension.From the perspective of the relationship between Singapore and China,this paper exploreshow The Straits Times reflected its "hedging" strategy toward China when reporting on the " Belt and Road " initiative,that is,between checks and balances and pursuits,and seeking the maximization of Singapore's national interests.Finally,the influencing factors behind Singapore's news production in a complex international environment were further explored.
