Abstract/Summary:
The Kingdom of Netherlands is located in the northwest of Europe,with a land area of only 41,528 square kilometers and a total population of less than 20 million.However,Netherlands has a flourishing economy,with a per capita GDP exceeding $ 50,000,a large number of multinational corporations and fantastic culture and art history.Its professional publishing accounts for half of the world’s.Elsevier Group ranks first among world publishers with a revenue of(?)5.025 billion,which is 15.7 times that of China Science Publishing and Media Ltd..In addition,there are also some other professional publishing giants in Netherlands,for example Wolters Kluwer which ranks fifth in the world.In the digital age when traditional publishing is declining,some publishing houses are unsustainable,and open access challenges the traditional professional publishing subscription model,the model of Netherlands provides a realistic guideline for the digital transformation of professional publishing houses.This paper shows the history and analyzes the prosperity of Dutch professional publishing through literature analysis,case studies,quantitative analysis and other methods,and conducts research on the status quo of its knowledge-based services.From the perspective of value chain and Internet products,it analyzes the classification of knowledge-based service products of the Dutch professional publishing giant Elsevier,and summarizes its characteristics.Finally,it points out the misunderstanding of the digital transformation of professional publishing houses in China in order to provide transformation directions for the high-quality development of China’s professional publishing.Firstly,this paper defines concepts and elaborate the theoretical framework of the research.This paper uses quantitative analysis to point out China’s current research status quo and deficiencies of the Dutch professional publishing and Elsevier,and clarifies the concepts of professional publishing,knowledge-based services and open access.Subsequently,it elaborates the value chain theory.Based on the author’s work experiences,this paper introduced in detail the analysis framework of Internet products including user research and product research to open the study view of Elsevier’s software.Secondly,this paper studies the knowledge-based services of Dutch professional publishing based on the value chain theory.It briefly introduces the history of Dutch publishing industry and Dutch professional publishing under the challenge of open access,and discusses the driving factors of Netherlands’ prosperity from the political,economic,social,and technical perspectives.Subsequently,based on the value chain theory,this paper analyzes the knowledge-based services of Dutch professional publishing and summarizes its major characteristics:the integration of production,education and research,and the division of publishing in the business and academic circles;a high degree of internationalization;enterprise-leading and comprehensive;unified goals and leadership of industry associations.Thirdly,this paper conducts a case study of Elsevier.This paper briefly introduces the development history of Elsevier,and the points out that Elsevier’s knowledge-based services has expanded from professional publishing to the entire scientific research value chain.From the perspective of Internet software,this paper categorizes Elsevier’s software:information services,scientific knowledge services,and engineering solutions.It studies its users and shows the functional modules,design features,and user experience of the software.The author summarizes the characteristics of Elsevier’s knowledge-based services as follows:diversified and comprehensive;centralized and empowering;rich in forms,strong in accessibility,and widely used in scenarios;involving abundant subjects;customized,highly integrated and portable.Finally,this paper discusses the path of digital transformation of professional publishing houses in China.The author points out that the knowledge-based services provided by China’s professional publishing houses are simple.Except for China Science Publishing and Media Ltd.,the knowledge-based services provided by other professional publishing houses are just digital publications,databases and e-commerce,which lacks of core competitiveness.Digital transformation is not about turning printed materials into digital forms or just collecting data,but about expanding the value chain and transforming it into a technology information solution provider and information services provider.The case of Elsevier gives us enlightenment and inspires us to make great efforts in extending the value chain,designing software based on user research and building a technical talent team to promote the high-quality development of professional publishing knowledge-based services transformation.
