A Study Of Zhang Taiyan's Newspaper Thought In The Period Of Minbao

Zhang Taiyan is an outstanding journalist in the history of modern Chinese journalism.His perspective on the press and newspaper campaign plays an important role in the history of modern journalism in China.According to his political tendency,Zhang Taiyan's career as a newspaper journalist can be divided into three phases:the reformation phase,the revolution phase,and the retreating phase.His career climaxes in his appointment as a journalist with Minbao.During this period,he carries on the perspective he develops as a reformation journalist in early times which lays the foundations for himself to elaborate his ideas more objectively as a journalist in later times.Zhang Taiyan's perspective on newspaper in the period of Minbao is the coordination of his academic learning and the then trend.As for the academic learning,he takes classic studies in Gujingjingshe and succeeds in its approach of seeking truth from the facts.He combines classics and history and practices his realistic approach developed in academic learning on newspaper editing.He also develops his social view by absorbing socialist thinking of western and Japanese society,which exerts a critical influence on Chinese feudalism.Moreover,his learns Buddhist Doctrine of Consciousness in prison which enables him to find the evidence of pursuing social freedom,equality and the ways of improving people's moral character.As for the then trend,with the fall of Qing Dynasty and the development of newspaper on political comments and by communicating with Zourong and Sun Yat-sen,he has a strong belief of advancing revolution with newspaper as a weapon.He further develops his thought of combining revolution and academic learning by working with his fellowmen in Minbao.Zhang Taiyan has edited a total of fourteen issues in Minbao and has served as a thinker and propagandist.On the one hand,from the perspective of the newspaper's function,it mainly plays a role of,with the newspaper,leading revolutionary opinion,evoking moral characters,stimulating the race identity and elucidating liberty.On the other hand,from the perspective of profession,he stresses the use of propaganda strategy,which mainly contains setting subjects with effectiveness and publicity,combining softening and incisive words and using tenor of interweaving reason and sense.With these function and strategy,Zhang Taiyan develops his own unique perspective as a journalist with Minbao.During the period in Minbao,Zhang Taiyan's perspective is mainly emphasizing the combination of politics and academic thought,and characterized by critical and creative thinking with religious culture.However,it lays stress more comment than news,which makes the articles obscure.As an erudite and revolutionary fighter,Zhang Taiyan's unique perspective on journalism has received much praise,and his refined style of writing and radical revolutionary thinking has exerted a great influence on Chinese modern journalism.He has also led the trend of modern journalist style of writing and political comment in China.And it has a special reference significance and inspiration for the later generations.
