Empathy ability is one of the important abilities for children to grow,for the first grade students who're just coming into the primary school,The larger changes including more complex environment,more difficult content in learning,and larger scope and deeper relationships have made them face more pressure and challenges.The improvement of empathy ability is conducive to first-grade students' better understanding of others,improvement of interpersonal relationships,development of emotions and emotions,and better adaptation to primary school life.Picture books are the favorite reading type for first-grade primary school students and have high educational value.Therefore,this study adopts picture books as the carrier to introduce picture books into first-grade primary school mental health education class,To design and implement a series of picture book reading teaching programs to improve students' empathy ability.This research adopts the methods of experiment and questionnaire to explore the influence of picture book reading on the empathy ability of the first grade primary school students.In this study,59 students from two first grade classes in an elementary school in Anyang were selected,and the two classes were randomly divided into an experimental group and a control group.The experimental group was taught to read picture books once a week for 9 weeks,while the control group was taught mental health education classes as usual.The results showed that: 1)there was no significant difference between the experimental group and the control group in the total empathy score and each dimension before the picture book reading instruction;2)after the picture book reading instruction,there was a significant difference between the experimental group and the control group in the total empathy score,cognitive empathy,and behavioral empathy;3)the gender analysis showed that the girls in the experimental group had a higher empathy score than the girls in the control group and the boys in the experimental group had a higher empathy score,cognitive empathy,and behavioral empathy than the boys in the control group.Combining observation and interview for qualitative analysis,this study concluded the following.(1)Picture book reading can enhance the empathy ability of first grade students.(2)Picture book reading can improve first grade students' cognitive and behavioral empathy,but it does not have a significant effect on emotional empathy.(3)Picture book reading enhances girls' empathy ability mainly in cognitive empathy,and enhances boys' empathy ability mainly in cognitive empathy and behavioral empathy.(4)The picture book reading teaching program with a duration of 9 weeks and once a week(40 minutes)can make a positive effect on the empathy ability of the first grade primary school students.
