Case Study Of Social Work Intervention In Elderly Suicide

As a heavy social event,suicide is a topic that few people are willing to face up.As the suicide data released by the Statistics Bureau of China since 1978,suicide prevention and intervention has become one of the important research topics in social work.According to the data of The third time national sampling report on the causes of residential death,th e suicide rate of the elderly over 70 years old is much higher than that of other age groups.At present our society does not attach much importance to the suicide problem of the elderly group and the traditional welfare policy still remains in the basic survival demand level of guaranteeing clothing.food,medical care and burial".and cares less about the mental health develop ment of the elderly group.When the author was working in the community for the social work services for the elderly,he also contacted several service objects with suicidal tendency.It has becom e particularly important regarding how to release the negative emotions for the service objects,strengthen the linkage between service objects and society,and improve the sense of belonging of service objects.Based on the data collection and literature review related to the elderly group,this paper hereby puts forward the research questions as follows:What is the suicide status of the elderly over 70 years old nowadays?What are the factors resulting in the suicide of the elderly?In the face of the service objects with suicidal tendency.is there any space for social workers to make intervention?How does casework interven e in suicide preven tion of elder ly people?Based on the analysis of suicide mortality data in the national sample areas specified in The third time national sampling report on th e causes of residential death,the author finds that with the increase of age,the suicide rate also shows an upward trend.especially the suicide rate of the elderly over 65 years old has risen sharply.385.75 elderly over 65 years old choose to end their lives every 100 000 people.Moreover,the suicide rate in cities is obviously different from that in rur al areas,and the suicide rate of the elderly in rural areas is far higher than that of the elderly in the city.Through the in-depth in terviews on the nursing home staff,elderly social workers,service recipients and elderly groups in the community.as well as case studies,and combining with the research perspective of social exclusion theory,this paper analyzes the main reason for the elderly suicide tendency is the weakening and breaking of the various ties between the in dividuals and the whole society.It points out that with the acceleration of social aging process.the elderly gradually become one of the vulnerable groups in society due to the decline of learning ability and physical function.and they will produce various physical and mental problems and social problems when they facing up huge social exclusion,and they may even encounter the non-autonomy of suicide ideation.The more social exclusion the elderly encountered,the higher the risk of suicide.As the elderly gradually lose their social worth,and tie less with the society,they thus gradually lose the platform of interacting with the society.In addition,their self-cognition and self-position also begin to change,which makes it difficult for them to feel their own value,with a sense of isolation from the society finally.It is found by the author through analysis that suicide can be prevented and intervened.The formation of the elderly subculture group can resist cultural exclusion to a certain extent.The greater the social support the elderly receive the less likely for them to be excluded by the society,and the lower suicide ideation they will have.Meanwhile,under the guidance of social support theory,it introduces the whole process that the social workers adopt the concept of case management and coordinate the workers from different institutions such as rehabilitation therapists,music therapy volunteers,and psychological counselors,to provide services for objects with suicidal tendency in the form of team cooperation,helping them establish a connection between the objects and the society.It further illustrates that suicide can be intervened.and there are many signs of seeking help after the objects producing suicidal ideation.If these signs can be found and intervened in time,maybe a life will be saved.Finally,the author proposes the suggestions from different levels,with the hope that the social event of elderly suicide can be taken seriously,more people can care about the elderly group,pay attention to their mental health and cultural entertainment activities,and provide more support,care and tolerance to them,so as to reduce the suicide rate of the elderly group.
