Study On Intervention And Prevention Program Of Elder Suicide

As earlier as 1992,Guangzhou has paced into the aging society.The aging population who is aged over 60 years has increased by 158,000 between 2003 and 2008,which lead the average annual increase of aging population to 3.2%exceeding the rate of local population increasement.While the problem of aging population is deteriorating,Elderly Suicide became a matter of common occurrence during the stage of society transforming caused by rapid growth of senior citizens.Suicide remains in the top five causes of death among elderly fatal incidents.According to statistics proof,China will reach the peak of aging population in 2050,by that time elderly suicide will be one of the most severe problems.The effective prevention for urban elders from committing suicide is an urgent issue to be addressed.The author discovered that during last five years the elders suicide occurred in X Street,Liwan District has raised adverse social impact.In contrast the existing research is tending to focus on the seniors living in a nursing home,or base on information contributed by the dead elderly suiciders.This paper is on the basis of activity theory and social support theory by applying literature analysis,interview survey and case study onto those two suicide attempt survivors,through which to profile the features and motive of elders’ suicide at the highest possibility.The feasible solution is summarized by interviews of client’s family and the clients themselves even including the elders with suicidal ideation;the solution is also conducted by establishing social work intervention for precaution in this neighborhood.In this paper,it targets primarily on the effective intervention approaches to reduce the high suicide rate as well as to build social work intervention system.Different from the current analysis bases on statics analysis of the dead,or elders who living in the nursing home,in this paper author targets senior citizens living in urban community and discuss the successful intervention of two suicidal survivors that help the clients walking out of predicament and resume life as normal.Summarization of main causes and motive of urban elders suicide as well as building up an intervention and prevention system.This research is practical and applicable to timely issues encountered by social workers.In this paper,by analyzing features and causes of elders suicide in diversed countries and regions based on theory of physiology,psychology and society,a preventive and interventive program is proposed to Civil Affair Office of X Street,Liwan District.Up to Nov 2018,this program has achieved its initial and received positive response that after implementation of this program,there is no recurrence of suicides,and suicidal attempters have no further committing suicide in X Street,Liwan District.In addition,once the program launched,the proportion of seniors who participating in social activities is enlarged.Meanwhile,the bridge between elders and external is formed by trained volunteers who pay regular visit to disabled and half disabled seniors.Social workers and family will be informed promptly of any abnormal signal or irregular response,by this means the chance of successful intervention has been highly improved.In this paper the program has preliminarily achieved its initial,however limited time and inadequate clients sample which is hopefully to be extended in further researches.
