The COVID-19 pandemic has brought all-around challenges to Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages(TCSOL).TCSOL has been forced to shift from offline to online. The TCSOL online is mostly based on the evolution of traditional offline teaching, and it is difficult to be adaptable online. The challenges caused by on-line education make Chinese teachers unable to adapt to online teaching in a short period, which directly affects the quality of TCSOL online. As an important tool for communication between teachers and learners in TCSOL,classroom teaching language(CTL)is the medium language used in TCSOL to facilitate the communication between teachers and learners. In TCSOL online, because of the lack of traditional non-verbal information, the choice of CTL is extremely important. However, there is no clear standard for the selection of CTL in TCSOL online currently. Therefore, investigating the use of CTL in TCSOL online during the epidemic is a guiding significance for the CTL of TCSOL.In addition,Chinese learning is not only the language learning, but also the learning of Chinese culture.Due to the complex political and cultural factors in China and India, the localization of Chinese language teaching in India is developing slowly, and the activities of TCSOL online have been carried out under the background of the COVID-19 epidemic. It provides a new solution for the localization of Chinese teaching in India, and exploring the language of TCSOL online suitable for Indian culture is very important for localized Chinese teaching in India. In study 1,the interview method was used to investigate the use of CTL in TCSOL online under the background of the COVID-19 epidemic through semistructured interviews and analyzed the impact of CTL on TCSOL online. The results showed that most of the teachers interviewed mainly use English or Chinese in their teaching, and only a small number of teachers are proficient and use the students' native language(except English). The mastery of native language or English and the understanding of students,English is usually used as the main CTL when targeting beginner learners or teaching more complex and abstract expressions.Although the teachers interviewed reported that they could be as student-centered as possible, lack of considering the differences between online and offline teaching,as well as the impact of the language of instruction on students from different countries or different cultural backgrounds, when teaching students from multiple countries, most teachers often use the premise of ensuring smooth teaching. The results show that when selecting the CTL in TCSOL online, teachers often use a one-size-fits-all approach to select students' native language or the common language of a third country as the main CTL based on their own experience.Study 2 adopts the teaching practice method, divides learners into an experimental group(not using English unless necessary)and control group(equal ratio of using English and Chinese)according to the proportion of Chinese in the CTL.The two groups of students were examined the impact of the increase in the proportion of Chinese in the CTL in India, and the influence of TCSOL online on the Chinese proficiency of primary Chinese learners. The results show that there were significant differences in the pre-test results of the two groups of learners in reading proficiency, but no significant differences in the post-test results. The results show that by increasing the proportion of using Chinese in the CTL,the reading and pronunciation proficiency of primary Chinese learners can be effectively improved.Above all, this study provides guidance and suggestions for the primary TCSOL online in India in the post-epidemic era.Teachers can appropriately increase the proportion of using Chinese in the online CTL according to their own needs so as to promote the effectiveness of TCSOL online.
