This paper takes cognitive theory of metaphor,cultural linguistics and prototype theory as theoretical guidance to explore the differences on semantic categories and metaphorical cognition between word groups of “?” in Chinese and of “blood” in English,and analyzes the causes of these differences.This paper consists of three chapters.The first chapter summarizes the meanings of “?” and “blood” from dictionaries,then figures out the extension and the metaphor type of the meanings,and constructs the semantic models of “?” and “blood” to make a simple comparison of the two.Based on the first chapter,with the help of dictionaries and corpuses,the second chapter is to collect the words containing “?” and “blood”so that the corresponding word groups of “?” in Chinese and “blood” in English are summarized.Then,to divide the semantic category of each word group according to the meanings of the related words and to analyze the metaphor in the words.Finally,the third chapter summarizes the cognitive characteristics of metaphors in the word groups of “?” and “blood” and analyzes the causes.It is found that the congruence of embodied cognition,metaphorical rules and grammaticalization rules lead to the similarities of metaphorical and cognitive characteristics of metaphor between the word group of “?” and the word group of “blood”.The differences in the cognitive connotation of blood,the relevance between medicine and philosophy,religious attitude,mode of production,hunting culture and diet culture make the disparities in the cognitive characteristics of metaphors between the word group of “?” and the word group of “blood”.
